## Expense Tracking Categories
- **Fixed:** Same every month (rent, subscriptions, loan payments)
- **Variable:** Changes month to month (groceries, gas, dining out)
- **Periodic:** Occasional (car repair, medical, gifts)
- **Discretionary:** Optional (entertainment, hobbies, shopping)

## Budget Review Process (Monthly)
1. Record all income received
2. Categorize every expense
3. Compare actual vs. budgeted amounts
4. Identify categories over/under budget
5. Adjust next month's budget based on trends
6. Review savings goal progress
7. Note any irregular expenses coming up

## Quick Formulas
- **Savings rate:** (Income - Expenses) / Income × 100
- **Expense ratio:** Category Expense / Total Income × 100
- **Months of runway:** Total Savings / Monthly Expenses
- **Break-even:** Fixed Costs / (1 - Variable Cost %)

## Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not tracking small purchases (they add up fast)
- Setting unrealistic budgets (start with tracking current spending)
- Forgetting periodic expenses (insurance, car registration, holidays)
- Not having an emergency fund buffer
- Treating the budget as rigid — it should be a living document
