# The 5-Component Positioning Method

> The 5-Component Positioning Method（五要素定位法）

Overview

Core Steps

1. 1. Competitive Alternatives: Identify what customers would use if you didn't exist (including Excel/Manual).
2. 2. Differentiated Capabilities: List features/capabilities you have that the alternatives lack.
3. 3. Differentiated Value: Map capabilities to the 'So What?' (Customer value buckets).
4. 4. Best Fit Customers: Identify characteristics of accounts that care deeply about this specific value.
5. 5. Market Category: Define the context/market where this value is obvious to these customers.

Core Principles

- Positioning is a team sport (Sales, Marketing, Product, CS, CEO).
- Don't start with 'Why do people love us?' (Too subjective).
- Differentiation must be defined relative to the status quo or short-list competitors.

When to Use

Common Mistakes

Real-World Example

Quote

> "Positioning defines how your product is the best in the world, delivering some value that a well-defined set of companies care a lot about."
