# DevExpress WPF Layout Management

DevExpress ships **six layout-management controls** for WPF, each solving a different layout problem. The two libraries are:

- **`DevExpress.Xpf.Docking`** — `DockLayoutManager` (Visual-Studio-style dockable panels, MDI, document selector, save/restore).
- **`DevExpress.Xpf.LayoutControl`** — `LayoutControl`, `DataLayoutControl`, `DockLayoutControl`, `FlowLayoutControl`, `TileLayoutControl` (in-panel layout containers).

Picking the right one is the most important decision — most layout problems map naturally to exactly one of the six. This skill covers the picker, building rules for each, and layout persistence.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need to:

- Build a Visual-Studio-like UI with dockable panels (`DockLayoutManager`)
- Build a data-entry form with auto-aligned labels and groups (`LayoutControl`)
- Auto-generate a form from a POCO via `DataAnnotations` attributes (`DataLayoutControl`)
- Show a Windows UI tile dashboard (`TileLayoutControl`)
- Arrange items in a wrapping flow with resizing and maximization (`FlowLayoutControl`)
- Dock items to the edges of a single panel (`DockLayoutControl`)
- Save and restore a user-customized layout

## Prerequisites & Installation

Both packages transitively reference `DevExpress.Wpf.Core` (MVVM helpers). Install whichever you need:

> **The name `LayoutGroup` exists in both namespaces** and refers to different types. Always check which namespace is bound — `dxdo:LayoutGroup` is for docking; `dxlc:LayoutGroup` is for the layout-control family.

## Before You Start — Ask the Developer

If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's `AskUserQuestion` tool or GitHub Copilot's `askQuestions` tool. If no such tool is available, ask the questions directly in the chat response before generating code.

1. **Target framework**: .NET 8+ or .NET Framework 4.x?
2. **What kind of layout?** Pick from:
   - **Dockable panels / MDI** → `DockLayoutManager`
   - **Compound data-entry form (labels + editors + groups)** → `LayoutControl`
   - **Auto-generated form from a class** → `DataLayoutControl`
   - **Tile dashboard** → `TileLayoutControl`
   - **Wrapping flow of cards/groupboxes** → `FlowLayoutControl`
   - **Dock to edges of one panel (no panel detach)** → `DockLayoutControl`
3. **Save/restore needed?** Whether end users will customize the layout and you need to persist it.
4. **Customization mode**: Should end users drag-and-drop items, hide them, resize them at runtime?

The control generates labels, editors (chosen by type), groups, and tabs from the attributes — no XAML required for the form layout.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |

| `dxlc:` / `dxdo:` prefix unresolved | Missing namespace / NuGet | Add both namespace declarations; install `DevExpress.Wpf.LayoutControl` and/or `DevExpress.Wpf.Docking`. |
| `LayoutGroup` ambiguous in XAML | Same name exists in `dxlc:` and `dxdo:` | Use the prefixed form: `<dxlc:LayoutGroup>` vs `<dxdo:LayoutGroup>`. |
| Picked `DockLayoutControl` but wanted Visual-Studio panels | Wrong control | Use `DockLayoutManager` instead — DockLayoutControl is for simple edge docking only. |
| `DataLayoutControl` ignores `[Display]` attributes | Wrong attribute namespace | `using System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations;` — not the WinUI / MVVM Toolkit `Display`. |

## Constraints & Rules

CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:

1. **Build verification**: After changes, run `dotnet build` and report errors.
2. **Target framework**: Windows-only (`net{X}-windows`, `UseWPF=true`).
3. **NuGet**: `DevExpress.Wpf.Docking` for `DockLayoutManager`; `DevExpress.Wpf.LayoutControl` for the five `*LayoutControl` variants. All DevExpress packages share one version.
4. **XAML namespaces**: `dxdo:` (docking), `dxlc:` (layout-control). Don't conflate them.
5. **`LayoutGroup` is two distinct classes** (in two namespaces). Always prefix.
6. **Pick the right control upfront** — see [control-varieties.md](references/control-varieties.md). Switching containers is expensive.
7. **Application ambiguity**: When generating `App.xaml.cs` on .NET 6+, qualify `System.Windows.Application`.
8. **For save/restore to work**, every panel/item needs a unique name (`x:Name` in static XAML, `BindableName` in MVVM).
9. **Adding assembly references (.NET Framework):** Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the `.csproj` references node to add new assembly references.
