# Brand Equity

The theoretical and operational resource for evaluating and building brand equity across
Every's portfolio. Anchored in Aaker as structural backbone, extended through Keller and
Kapferer, and situated in cultural theory through Holt, Bourdieu, Hebdige, and others.
The skill provides the shared vocabulary, scoring methodology, and evaluation framework
for equity-level work.

Loaded by all positioning skills and by brand-voice skills when doing equity-level work —
any task that asks "how strong is this brand?" or "how do we make it stronger?" routes
through here.

## System

Brand equity is organized around three scoring dimensions and one supplementary
diagnostic, supported by nine reference files.

### Three scoring dimensions

**Identity Clarity** (Aaker + Kapferer): how well-defined, coherent, and internally
consistent the brand's identity system is. Evaluates core and extended identity, brand
essence, the four Aaker perspectives, distinctive assets (semiotic grounding), and the
Kapferer culture and self-image facets.

**Cognitive Presence** (Keller + behavioral heuristics): the depth and structure of
brand knowledge in the target audience's mind. Always scored audience-relative — against
a specified target segment, not the general population. Evaluates salience, associations,
judgments, feelings, resonance, and category entry points where applicable.

**Cultural Position** (Holt + Bourdieu + Hebdige + others): whether the brand occupies
a genuine position in the cultural field — whether it resolves a real tension, confers
cultural capital, and maintains distinctiveness from the mainstream. Includes a standing
recuperation risk monitor evaluated on a separate cadence.

### Supplementary diagnostic

**McLuhan media analysis**: brand-medium temperature fit, the tetrad, and reversal risk
analysis. Applied after scoring, not as a scored dimension. Outputs a brand temperature
assessment, a temperature-medium fit check, and a tetrad map.

### References

**references/aaker.md** — Brand identity system (core/extended identity, brand essence,
four perspectives) and brand equity model (awareness, associations, perceived quality,
loyalty, proprietary assets). The structural backbone.

**references/keller.md** — CBBE pyramid (salience, performance, imagery, judgments,
feelings, resonance) and brand resonance model. Audience-relative scoring methodology.
The cognitive measurement instrument.

**references/kapferer.md** — Brand identity prism (physique, personality, culture,
relationship, reflection, self-image). Sender/receiver structural logic. The identity
coherence diagnostic.

**references/holt.md** — Iconic strategy, cultural myth, and what tension a brand
resolves. The cultural positioning framework.

**references/semiotics-heuristics.md** — Peirce, Barthes, and de Saussure for
distinctive brand assets; Tversky/Kahneman for mental availability and category entry
points; one-paragraph critique of Sharp's generalization failures. Replaces

**references/cultural-capital.md** — Bourdieu (distinction, habitus, cultural capital),
Hebdige (bricolage, recuperation), Agamben (taste as a historically emergent faculty),
McCracken (meaning transfer), Goffman (brands as props in self-presentation), W. David
Marx (Status and Culture).

**references/cultural-practitioners.md** — Glenn O'Brien case study; Supreme as bricolage
and recuperation case; counterculture-to-mainstream absorption pattern; Warhol/Factory,
Westwood/McLaren, Beastie Boys as additional practitioner cases.

**references/mcluhan-media.md** — Hot/cool media, brand temperature, tetrad, and
temperature-medium fit as a brand channel diagnostic.

**references/evaluation-rubric.md** — The operational rubric. Three-dimension scoring
with sub-components, 1–5 anchors, target-shape scoring, recuperation risk monitor,
McLuhan diagnostic section, and full evaluation template.

## When to invoke

- When evaluating the equity strength of an Every sub-brand
- When a positioning skill needs brand equity context to inform its framework
- When building or auditing a brand-voice for equity alignment
- When diagnosing where a brand is stuck (awareness, associations, resonance, cultural position)
- When assessing recuperation risk for any brand in the portfolio
- When making a strategic decision that trades off short-term activation against
  long-term brand building
- When evaluating channel or campaign decisions against brand-medium fit

## Reference routing

| Task type | Load |
|---|---|
| Brand architecture or identity construction | `references/aaker.md` |
| Consumer-side equity diagnosis (salience, resonance) | `references/keller.md` |
| Brand identity coherence or prism analysis | `references/kapferer.md` |
| Cultural myth, tension, and iconic strategy | `references/holt.md` |
| Distinctive assets (semiotic), mental availability, CEPs | `references/semiotics-heuristics.md` |
| Cultural capital, distinction, recuperation | `references/cultural-capital.md` |
| Practitioner cases and counterculture pattern | `references/cultural-practitioners.md` |
| Brand-medium fit, tetrad, brand temperature | `references/mcluhan-media.md` |
| Scoring or evaluating a specific brand's equity | `references/evaluation-rubric.md` |

Multiple references can and should be loaded simultaneously. A full equity evaluation
loads all nine. A recuperation risk check loads `cultural-capital.md` and
`cultural-practitioners.md`. A channel strategy decision loads `mcluhan-media.md` and
`evaluation-rubric.md`.
