# Compound Brand

Build the top half of a brand book through a gated AI-human process, then carry the
approved strategy into character, equity modeling, verbal identity, and art direction.
The skill compresses weeks of research and synthesis into reviewable drafts. It does
not remove the human decisions that make a brand distinctive.

## When to invoke

- When creating or rebuilding a brand from strategic foundation through visual identity
- When a founder or brand lead wants a complete top-half brand book to edit
- When research, positioning, character, voice, and art direction need one ruled process
- When a team wants AI to automate the process while preserving human approval and taste
- When testing the compound marketing method on a real brand, product, event, or portfolio

## Governing sequence

Run the phases in order. Do not begin the next phase until the human approves the current
one.

1. **Strategic foundation:** business philosophy, customer, demand, category, competition,
positioning, positioning statement, value propositions, purpose, mission, vision, and
   values
2. **Brand character:** archetype, personality, behavioral traits, and relationship model
3. **Brand equity:** optional Aaker-led identity and equity modeling, with Keller,
Kapferer, and cultural diagnostics as needed
4. **Verbal identity:** functional-led and emotional-led territories, then a usable voice
   system
5. **Art direction:** reference-led visual territories and a complete visual identity
   system

Load `references/strategic-foundation.md` for phase one, `references/approval-gates.md`
for the interaction contract, `references/equity-phase.md` for phase three, and
`references/complete-top-half-example.md` before presenting the first complete draft.

## Working rule

AI does the collection, comparison, synthesis, option generation, and document assembly.
The human supplies proprietary context, evaluates the options, corrects taste failures,
and locks consequential decisions.

Never present an open field of undifferentiated possibilities. Present two or three
developed options with a recommendation and the evidence behind it. For positioning-map
axes, present four or five defensible pairs and require the human to choose or edit one.

## Phase behavior

### Strategic foundation

Require a research corpus before recommending a position. Use proprietary customer data
when it exists. If the brand is new or cannot survey customers, build a documented online
corpus and mark the hypotheses that need post-launch validation.

The first complete deliverable is the top half of the brand book. Show the finished
example before asking the human to audit their draft.

### Brand character

Build character from the approved foundation. Archetype is a decision tool, not a costume.
Define how the brand behaves, what relationship it forms, and how its character changes
across contexts without changing its philosophy.

### Brand equity

Explain the value of a deeper equity model and ask whether the human wants to complete it
now or save it for later. Skipping is allowed. Record the skip and route back when the
brand has more customers, data, or distinctive assets.

### Verbal identity

Offer no more than two territories: one led by function and one led by emotion. Each must
share the same approved strategy. The human chooses, combines with explicit reasoning, or
requests one revision before the system is codified.

### Art direction

Require five to 10 human-supplied references and at least three anti-references. Guide the
selection through interview questions. Run a competitive visual and semiotic audit before
territory development. Offer no more than two territories, again functional-led and
emotional-led.

Art direction precedes asset generation. Do not imply that a moodboard is an identity or
that image generation can replace a designed system.

## Output

Produce a versioned brand-book draft containing:

- Evidence ledger and competitive audit
- Audience definition and demand model
- Category and positioning matrix
- Approved positioning, statement, and value propositions
- Purpose, mission, vision, values, and enduring philosophy
- Character, archetype, traits, and relationship model
- Optional equity model and measurement plan
- Verbal identity and surface guidance
- Visual territory, identity components, and surface system
- Decision log, open hypotheses, and validation triggers

## Quick checklist

- [ ] Research corpus and evidence ledger exist before positioning
- [ ] Philosophy is separated from changeable customer demand and market expression
- [ ] Category, goal, customer promise, mental position, business system, integrity
mechanism, audience expressions, and commercial logic are distinct
- [ ] Competitive audit includes a required positioning matrix
- [ ] Human chose or edited the matrix axes
- [ ] Two or three strategic options were offered at each consequential decision
- [ ] Each priority audience has a customer promise, brand role, brand-equity role, and
commercial role before channel messaging is written
- [ ] Framework outputs end in plain behavioral or business decisions
- [ ] Protected language and ownable assets are recorded separately from connective copy
- [ ] Each phase was approved before the next began
- [ ] Equity modeling was completed or explicitly deferred
- [ ] Verbal identity preceded visual identity
- [ ] Art direction used five to 10 human references and explicit anti-references
- [ ] Final system covers real surfaces, not a moodboard alone
- [ ] Ruled changes were reconciled across the full artifact, including the table of
contents, summaries, messaging, and legacy terminology
