1. Establish the audience, purpose, desired action, context, and constraints
   before changing the draft.
2. Preserve the author's intended voice, perspective, commitments, and level of
   formality. Improve clarity without making the writing sound generic or
   inventing personal experience.
3. Lead with the useful idea, organize for the reader's decision path, make
   concrete details carry their weight, and remove repetition or vague filler.
4. Use examples, emphasis, and narrative only when they improve comprehension.
   Avoid hype, false urgency, manufactured certainty, and claims unsupported by
   supplied evidence.
5. Present substantive rewrites as choices when intent is uncertain, and explain
   any remaining factual or audience assumptions.
