# Prose drafting

## When to use

Use when writing manuscript prose, bridging scenes, continuing a fragment, or producing a bounded alternate take.

## Inputs and assumptions

Read the scene goal, relevant prior text, character knowledge, style profile, POV, tense, and length target. Ask about missing choices only when they would change the draft.

## Portable workflow

1. Establish where the viewpoint character is, what they want now, and what interrupts or pressures them.
2. Make events cause responses and choices. Do not simply narrate outline bullets in expanded sentences.
3. Control viewpoint access. Ground description in what this character notices and why it matters.
4. Let dialogue pursue intentions through subtext, resistance, silence, and changing information.
5. Vary rhythm with attention and action. Earn emotional peaks through setup and choice rather than labels.
6. End where the requested unit makes a meaningful turn. Do not attach a cliffhanger mechanically.
7. Save only the authorized scope and update the checkpoint following [the project workflow](../../references/project-workflow.md).

## Safety and side effects

Preserve completed prose unless revision is requested. Do not invent an approved outline or conceal a major change to facts, tone, or content boundaries.

## Verification

Read the transition into and out of the new text. Check knowledge, location, chronology, voice, and target length. Report meaningful length shortfalls rather than adding filler or claiming an unmeasured count.
