# Conversion Copy Doctrine

> Activate whenever the task involves writing or reviewing copy meant to move a reader to action — sales pages, product descriptions, landing pages, email sequences, ads, calls to action, store listings, or "make this more persuasive." Trigger on any copywriting request where a conversion, signup, purchase, or click is the goal. Fire BEFORE drafting — copy written before the reader, the problem, and the single desired action are defined is decoration, and most underperforming copy failed at definition, not at wording.

## Universal So-What

Copy does not fail at the sentence level — it fails at the aim level.
Words polished for nobody in particular, promising everything,
requesting three actions at once, convert no one. The doctrine is
aim-first: one reader, one problem, one promise, one action — and
every claim in between carrying its proof. Persuasion built any other
way is pressure, and readers smell pressure.

---

## Core Doctrine

### 1. The One-Reader Rule

- Copy is written to ONE person: a specific reader with a specific
problem, at a specific level of awareness — defined in writing
  before the first sentence
- Awareness level dictates the opening: a reader who does not know
the problem exists needs the problem shown; a reader comparing
solutions needs the difference; a reader ready to buy needs the
friction removed. One piece of copy cannot serve all three —
  choosing is the strategy.
- The vocabulary is the reader's, harvested from how THEY describe
the problem (reviews, messages, calls) — copy that names the
reader's problem in the reader's words earns the next paragraph

### 2. The Promise Discipline

- One core promise per piece: the single change the offer makes in
the reader's life — everything else is support
- The promise is specific and honest: a claim the product can keep
and the reader can picture. Overpromise converts once and refunds
forever; the doctrine optimizes for the second purchase.
- Features are translated to outcomes, every time: nobody buys the
drill bit's tungsten coating; they buy the hole that doesn't
splinter — the feature earns its sentence only through the outcome
  it produces

### 3. The Claims-and-Proof Ledger

- Every claim carries its proof within reach: demonstration,
specifics, testimony, guarantee, or track record — a claim without
proof is a request for blind trust the reader has no reason to grant
- Specificity is the cheapest proof: "ships in 2 days" outworks
"fast shipping"; numbers outwork adjectives; named results outwork
  superlatives
- Honesty constraints are structural: no manufactured scarcity, no
fake countdowns, no invented social proof, no testimonial edited
past what the person said. These convert short-term and poison the
brand's most valuable asset — being believed.

### 4. One Action Per Piece

- Every piece of conversion copy requests exactly ONE action, stated
plainly, repeated where the reader's decision peaks
- Competing calls to action split intent and depress all of them —
secondary actions (follow, browse, learn more) are removed or
  demoted to the footer
- The action's friction is engineered: what the reader must do, how
long it takes, what happens next — stated at the point of action,
because unanswered "what happens when I click" is the quiet killer
  of conversion

### 5. Structure Serves the Skimmer First

- Copy is built for two readers at once: the reader of every word
and the skimmer of headlines — the skim path (headline, subheads,
bolded lines, captions, CTA) must carry the full argument alone
- The opening earns the second line; the second line earns the third
  — no throat-clearing, no company history above the fold, no
  "welcome to our page"
- Objections are answered where they arise, in sequence: price
objections near the price, trust objections near the commitment,
  effort objections near the action

### 6. The Copy Test Gate

Before any conversion copy ships:

- **The stranger test:** someone matching the reader profile reads
it cold — can they say what is offered, for whom, and what to do
next? Misses are rewrites, not shrugs.
- **The claim audit:** every claim checked against the ledger — can
the business keep this sentence? Legal and refund exposure live in
  the copy's promises.
- **The read-aloud pass:** conversion copy is rhythm; clunks found
  by mouth get cut
- Measurement hooks defined before launch: what counts as the
conversion, where it is tracked, and what baseline it beats —
copy without measurement is opinion with a publish date

---

## Common Failure Modes

| Failure | Cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Beautiful copy, no conversions | Written to nobody in particular | One-reader rule; awareness level chosen |
| High refunds, angry customers | Overpromise converted them | Promise the product keeps; optimize purchase two |
| Readers bounce at the claims | No proof within reach | Claims-and-proof ledger |
| Clicks split across five buttons | Competing calls to action | One action per piece |
| Skimmers convert at zero | Argument buried in paragraphs | Skim path carries the case alone |
| "It's live" with no learning | No measurement hooks | Conversion defined and tracked before launch |

---

## Non-Negotiables

1. Reader, problem, awareness level, and single action defined before
   drafting.
2. One core promise, kept-able, per piece.
3. Every claim carries reachable proof.
4. No manufactured scarcity, fake urgency, or invented social proof —
   ever.
5. The skim path carries the full argument.
6. No launch without measurement hooks.
