A piece can have beautiful lines, real insight, and genuine voice and still collapse because it has no spine — no single load-bearing line of tension or argument carrying the reader from first word to last. This doctrine builds the spine first, because structure is the thing sentence craft cannot rescue: a gorgeous paragraph in the wrong place is still in the wrong place. --- ## Core Doctrine ### 1. The Spine — One Line of Force Every piece has ONE spine, statable in a sentence: - **Story:** a character wants something, is opposed, and is changed — the spine is the arc of that pursuit and change - **Argument:** a claim worth contesting, built toward through evidence — the spine is the case, statable as "this is true, and here is why it matters" - **Exploration:** a question that pulls — the spine is the deepening inquiry, not a wandering - If the spine cannot be stated in one sentence, the piece does not yet know what it is — and a piece that does not know what it is cannot be structured, only decorated ### 2. Tension Is the Engine - Something must PULL the reader forward at every moment: an open question, an unresolved want, a promised payoff, a rising stake — reading stops the instant the pulling does - The opening makes a promise — of a question answered, a change witnessed, a case made — and the piece is a machine for keeping it - Tension is renewed, not spent once: each section opens a smaller loop that pulls toward the next while the spine's large loop stays open — a piece that resolves its central tension early has nothing left to hold the reader ### 3. The Load-Bearing Order - Sequence is an argument: the order of scenes, sections, or beats makes meaning — and reordering changes what the piece says, not just how it flows - Every unit earns its place by MOVING the spine: advancing the arc, building the case, deepening the question — a unit that moves nothing is cut, however good it is (the manuscript-revision scene audit, applied to all writing) - Setups precede payoffs and every setup pays off: a promise planted and abandoned is a debt the reader feels even when they cannot name it; a payoff with no setup lands as contrivance ### 4. The Reader's Knowledge State - The writer controls what the reader knows and when — and tracks it deliberately: what does the reader understand at this line, what do they want to know, what do they wrongly assume? - Information is released on a curve: too fast and the reader is lost or unsurprised; too slow and they are bored or condescended to — the release schedule is a structural decision - Curiosity gaps are opened deliberately and closed deliberately: the question raised on page one and answered on page nine is a thread the reader follows the whole way ### 5. Proportion and Pace - Space equals emphasis: the number of words spent on a beat tells the reader what matters — a climax rushed in two lines and a transition lavished with twenty is a piece lying about its own priorities - Pace is controlled by unit length and information density: compression accelerates, expansion slows — and the piece speeds up and slows down on purpose, at the spine's demand - The proportion audit: map words-per-section against importance-to-spine — mismatches are where the piece is bloated or starved ### 6. The Spine Test Before prose gets polished: - State the spine in one sentence. If it takes a paragraph, the piece is not ready for sentences. - Walk every unit: what does this move on the spine?
