Most prose is not too plain — it is too crowded: hedges, throat-clearing, abstractions, and redundant scaffolding burying the strong sentence that was already there. Precision is subtraction before it is addition. The protocol sharpens by removing what dilutes, then strengthens what remains — in that order, because you cannot see the strong sentence until the weak words around it are gone. --- ## Core Doctrine ### 1. Prerequisite — Structure Holds First - Line editing runs only on sound structure: sentence surgery on a piece with no spine polishes what should be cut (confirm via narrative-spine-architecture before starting) - If structural problems surface during line editing, the protocol stops and returns the piece to structural work — a beautifully edited paragraph that the structure will delete is waste ### 2. The Subtraction Pass — Cut First The first pass removes, and it removes in known categories: | Cut | Why | |---|---| | Hedges (somewhat, quite, rather, a bit, kind of) | They shrink claims the writer should either make or drop | | Throat-clearing (it is important to note, needless to say, in order to) | Preamble that delays the sentence's actual work | | Redundancy (each and every, end result, past history) | One word already carries the meaning | | Filter words (I think, it seems, arguably) where the frame is understood | The reader knows whose view this is | | Intensifiers propping weak words (very unique, really huge) | A precise word needs no crutch | The rule: if the sentence survives the cut with meaning intact, the cut word was dilution. ### 3. Verbs Carry, Nouns Anchor - The verb is the sentence's engine: strong, specific, active verbs do the work that strings of adverbs and adjectives fake — "sprinted" beats "ran very quickly" - Nominalizations are un-buried: "made a decision" becomes "decided," "gave consideration to" becomes "considered" — the buried verb is freed and the sentence shortens and quickens - Concrete nouns beat abstract ones where the point is to be seen: the reader pictures "a rusted hinge," not "a state of disrepair" — abstraction is used deliberately, never by default ### 4. Rhythm and Sentence Variety - Sentence length is music: all-long lulls, all-short hammers, variety carries — the pattern is heard by reading aloud, the only reliable instrument - The strong position is the sentence's end: the last word rings longest, so the sentence lands on its most important word, not on a trailing qualifier - Paragraph shape matters too: a paragraph is a unit of thought, and a page of uniform blocks is as tiring as uniform sentences — white space is pacing ### 5. Precision of Meaning - The nearly-right word is a defect: "reticent" is not "reluctant," "comprise" is not "compose" — the word that means exactly the thing beats the word that gestures at it - Concrete beats vague on every axis the point requires: a number beats "many," a name beats "a thing," a specific beats a category — except where deliberate generality serves - Clichés are dead precision: they were vivid once and are now invisible — replaced with the fresh phrasing the cliché is standing in for, or cut ### 6. The Precision Passes and Their Limit - Read-aloud is mandatory: the ear catches what the eye forgives — clunks, repetitions, breath failures, and rhythm ruts surface only by mouth - Echo hunt: unintended repeated words and pet constructions, found and varied - The overcorrection guard: precision serves voice, it does not sand voice away — a piece edited until every sentence is uniformly tight can lose the rhythm, warmth, and idiosyncrasy that made it worth reading. The last question is always: does it still sound like a person?
