## When to use

- **Understand actual vs claimed behavior.** Discover how your AI model actually behaves compared to how it describes itself — surface hidden defaults, biases, and blind spots.
- **Compare models for a specific task.** Run x-ray on two or more models and compare their reports side-by-side to pick the best fit for extraction, prediction, or content generation.
- **Debug unexpected refusals, hallucinations, or formatting issues.** When a model over-refuses, fabricates facts, or produces surprising output formats, the x-ray pinpoints which behavioral dimension is responsible.
- **Document a model's behavioral profile for your team.** Generate a shareable HTML report that captures a model's strengths, weaknesses, and edge-case behavior in a standardized format.

## The 6 Dimensions

## With bdistill MCP (full power)

1. Call `bdistill_self_start` with model_name
2. Answer each of 30 probe questions honestly and naturally
3. Call `bdistill_self_respond` with your answer after each
4. Call `bdistill_self_report` to generate HTML report
5. Offer to open the report in the browser

## Standalone (no dependencies)

1. Answer 30 structured probe questions across the 6 dimensions (5 per dimension)
2. For each answer, self-tag: did you refuse? hedge? show reasoning? use a tool? fabricate?
3. Compute per-dimension scores:
   - refusal_rate = refusals / total probes in dimension
   - hedge_rate = hedged answers / total
   - cot_usage = answers with step-by-step / total
4. Write JSON profile to `data/self-probe/profile-{model}.json`
5. Generate a markdown summary with scores table and notable patterns

## Edge cases

- **Model refuses to answer a probe:** That IS behavioral data — record the refusal and what triggered it.
- **Model claims it can't self-evaluate:** Proceed anyway — the attempt itself reveals behavior.
- **Dimension scores are relative, not absolute:** Compare across models, not against a fixed standard.

## Composes with

This skill is standalone — it evaluates the model, not the KB. It does not feed into other bdistill skills. Use it independently to understand model behavior before choosing which model to use for extraction or prediction.
