# Espionage

Espionage fiction is about loyalty and its cost. Action is rare, patience is
constant, and betrayal is a logical consequence, never a free surprise.

## 1. Reading contract

The reader demands: a researched trade, tension of information rather than
action, composite loyalties, and an ending where victory is ambiguous.

## 2. The trade

Research at level 3: recruiting a source, handling, dead drops,
counter-surveillance, exfiltration, compartmentalisation, the hierarchy of
services, political oversight.

Realities to respect:

- Most of the work is administrative and slow.
- A source is recruited through a need, rarely through money alone: debt,
  ideology, resentment, ego, protecting someone.
- The handler is responsible for their source's life, which creates the moral
  knot of the genre.
- Compartmentalisation prevents anyone from knowing everything, the reader
  included.
- A successful operation is never known.

## 3. Tension

- The threat is not combat, it is exposure. Being seen, being recognised,
  being reported.
- Surveillance and counter-surveillance are scenes in their own right: routes,
  dead time, checkpoints.
- Waiting is the natural rhythm of the genre. It fills with procedure,
  verification and doubt.
- Doubt about an ally must stay open for a long time and resolve through a
  verifiable fact.

## 4. Loyalties

Build a loyalty tree: every character serves several entities, a service, a
country, a family, an idea, a person. Betrayal arises from the ranking among
those loyalties, not from a change of character.

Rule: the reader must be able to reread the novel and see that the traitor was
coherent from the first page.

## 5. Structure

- Open on a routine operation that fails slightly.
- The protagonist is given a subordinate task that reveals an anomaly.
- Internal investigation, compartmentalised, with obstruction from above.
- Midpoint: the anomaly touches someone close.
- Final third: a choice between two loyalties, with no clean option.
- Ending: human cost, institutional gain, or the reverse.

## 6. Cliches to turn or prohibit

- The invincible seductive agent.
- The gadget that resolves the scene.
- The mole revealed by a cosmetic clue.
- The car chase as the climax.
- The entirely incompetent opposing service.
- Patriotism as the sole motivation.

## 7. Exit checks

- Compartmentalisation is respected by the narrative itself.
- Every source has an identified need.
- The betrayal is coherent in retrospect.
- At least two technically accurate surveillance scenes.
- The ending does not make the victory clean.

## 8. Auto-critique

The eleven constitution axes, plus four genre axes: professional accuracy,
compartmentalisation held, coherence of the betrayal, final ambiguity.

Threshold: no axis below 3, average at least 4 on professional accuracy and
coherence of the betrayal.
