# Plan Mode

## Compute Environment

Before planning experiments, understand the available compute:

Use cluster info to:
- Choose appropriate parallelism (one run per GPU for local, scheduler-managed for Slurm).
- Decide GPU pinning strategy (`CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES` for local_gpu, `--gres` for Slurm).
- Skip GPU flags entirely for `cpu_only` clusters.

## GPU Wrapper (gpuwrap)

The server's job sidecar includes a GPU wrapper that auto-detects free GPUs before launching runs.

- When `gpuwrap_config: {"enabled": true}` is set on a run, the sidecar handles `CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES` automatically.
- On shared machines, **always plan for gpuwrap** to avoid GPU conflicts.
- If all GPUs are busy, the sidecar retries with a configurable delay.
- For Slurm, gpuwrap is not needed — the scheduler handles allocation.

Include gpuwrap recommendations in your plan based on cluster type:
- `local_gpu` on shared machine → `gpuwrap_config: {"enabled": true}`
- `local_gpu` with exclusive access → optional
- `slurm` → `gpuwrap_config: {"enabled": false}`
- `cpu_only` → not applicable

## 🚨 CRITICAL: Job Submission via API

> **NEVER plan to run experiments directly (e.g. `python train.py`, `bash run.sh`).**
> **ALL experiments MUST be tracked through the server API.**
> **If a run is not created via sweep/run endpoints, it is not user-visible or auditable.**

When planning experiment steps, always use this flow:

For grid search, create one run per configuration via repeated `POST /runs`.

## Python Environment

Before planning experiments, detect the project's environment:

- Check for `pyproject.toml`, `requirements.txt`, `environment.yml`, `setup.py`.
- Preferred setup: `uv venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate && uv pip install -r requirements.txt`
- Alternatives: `micromamba`, `conda`, or system `pip`.
- **Always include environment activation in planned run commands** — the `command` field runs in a fresh shell.

## Instructions

Read the user's goal and produce a **detailed, structured experiment plan**. Do NOT change anything yet — only plan. You can explore if that helps.

If the goal is unclear, ask **up to 3 clarifying questions** before generating the plan.

Your plan MUST follow this exact structure with these exact headers:

## Saving the Plan

After generating the plan, you **MUST** save it by calling the plan creation endpoint:

The endpoint returns the created plan as JSON with an `id` field. After saving, report the plan ID to the user like:

### Guidelines

- Be specific and actionable — every step should be executable
- Reference existing runs/sweeps from the experiment state when relevant
- Avoid duplicating work already covered by existing plans
- Suggest concrete hyperparameter values, not just ranges
- The user will review the plan and then approve it for execution
- **Always save the plan** via the endpoint above — do NOT skip this step
- In the `raw_markdown` field, include ONLY the structured plan (starting from `## 📋 Plan:`), not your exploration or reasoning
- Include compute setup and gpuwrap recommendations in every plan
