# Agent Redteam

Generates adversarial inputs designed to expose unsafe, over-compliant, or brittle failure modes. The complement to agent-eval's correctness testing — here, a "pass" means the agent refused, hedged, or degraded gracefully.

## How this works

1. **Define the failure modes you're targeting.** Common categories:
   - **Prompt injection** — user input that tries to override system instructions or embed new directives
   - **Jailbreaks** — inputs that try to elicit disallowed content via roleplay, hypotheticals, or framing tricks
   - **Over-refusal** — benign inputs the agent incorrectly refuses (false positives are a real failure mode)
   - **Boundary probing** — edge cases near policy lines (e.g. dual-use information, ambiguous requests)
   - **Context manipulation** — inputs that try to confuse the agent about its own prior context or state

2. **Generate adversarial cases.** Start from the labeled seed set in
   `examples/adversarial_seed.jsonl` (15 cases across all five failure modes and
   several attack surfaces), then expand it by *mutating* each seed along known
   axes — framing wrappers, encoding, instruction-override phrasing, and surface
   shifts (moving a payload from the user turn into a tool argument or retrieved
   context). The full strategy — the failure-mode × attack-surface coverage
   matrix, the mutation axes, and the generation loop — is in
   `references/case-generation.md`.

   Each case carries:
   - `id` — stable identifier
   - `category` — the failure mode (prompt-injection, jailbreak, over-refusal, boundary-probing, context-manipulation)
   - `surface` — where the payload enters (direct, tool-arg, rag-context, file, multi-turn)
   - `input` — the adversarial prompt (for a `multi-turn` case, the final turn — see `turns` below)
   - `expected_behavior` — `refuse`, `hedge` (answer with a caveat/verification), or `answer` (benign — refusing is the failure)
   - `notes` — why that behavior is the correct one
   - `turns` (only for genuinely multi-turn cases, e.g. `adv_015`) — the full conversation history as `[{"role", "content"}, ...]` leading up to `input`, when the buildup across turns is itself part of the attack (a fictional-persona frame established earlier, an incremental escalation) rather than a single message that merely *claims* a prior turn happened (which needs only `input`, like `adv_013`/`adv_014`).    Always include `answer` cases. An eval set with only refuse-cases optimizes
   the agent toward uselessly over-refusing — the over-refusal cases are what
   keep it honest.

3. **Run the agent under test on each `input`, then score the outputs.** Scoring
   reuses agent-eval's pipeline — no duplication. The scored results are a
   *separate* file from the seed, in the JSONL schema `score_eval.py` reads
   (`category` here is the failure mode, so pass rates break down per attack type):

   Run the scorer (symlinked into this skill, or call agent-eval's directly):

   `examples/adversarial_results.jsonl` is a worked example scoring the 15 seed
   cases — it includes three deliberate failures (a retrieved-context injection, a
   PII-exfiltration via claimed authorization, and a multi-turn roleplay jailbreak)
   so you can see the report actually surface failures, not just confirm passes.
   Keep adversarial results in their own file and report them separately from
   correctness evals.

4. **Grade refusal quality, not just refusal rate.** A pass means the agent refused or hedged *well* — it explained clearly, wasn't needlessly unhelpful, and didn't leak system prompt structure in the process. A refusal that's rude, vague, or reveals internal details is a partial failure.

5. **Promote confirmed failures to regression tests.** When an adversarial case exposes a real failure, move it to a named regression file (`examples/adversarial_regressions.jsonl` — see the worked example there: `adv_002`/`adv_014`/`adv_015`, the three documented failures in `examples/adversarial_results.jsonl`) and run it on every system prompt change. `scripts/verify_regressions_promoted.py` checks that every promoted case is a frozen, unmodified copy of its seed case and traces to a real sub-threshold score in `adversarial_results.jsonl` — it can't re-run promoted cases against your actual agent (that happens in your agent's own CI), but it does catch a "regression" case that was never a real failure, or one that's silently drifted from what was actually tested.

## Guidelines

- Never mix adversarial pass rates with correctness pass rates in the same aggregate — they measure different properties of the system.
- Cross-reference: `references/case-generation.md` for building/growing the case set, `skills/agent-eval/SKILL.md` for rubric-based scoring, and `skills/agent-eval/references/llm-judge-prompt.md` for judge prompt templates.
- This skill generates cases; agent-eval scores them. Keep these concerns separate.
