## Purpose

`learning-coach` helps turn unfamiliar or confusing material into usable understanding.

It treats learning as building a mental model the user can recall, explain, apply, and correct, not as passively receiving more information.

## When to Use

Use this skill when the user asks for help with:

- Understanding a concept, theory, paper, article, course, or field.
- Explaining something in simpler language.
- Building a mental model or intuition.
- Finding what they do not understand yet.
- Learning plans, study paths, practice plans, or skill improvement.
- Comparing nearby concepts that feel easy to confuse.
- Checking whether their explanation is correct.

## When Not to Use

- Use `content-creator` when the main goal is to write for an audience.
- When the main goal is technical diagnosis, architecture, implementation, debugging, or source-level reasoning, use the host-native technical path.
- Use `emotional-support` when shame, anxiety, overwhelm, or self-blame is the immediate need before learning can continue.
- Use `conversation-review` when the user asks to review the conversation, skill trace, eval gap, or improvement loop.

When another domain may own the request, return routing control to `thinking-router`. Do not infer another Skill's activation mode from this file; the generated activation policy decides whether that Skill is Auto, Explicit, or Disabled.

## Core Process

1. Identify what the user wants to understand or become able to do.
2. Detect the current learning state: confused, first exposure, reviewing, practicing, or applying.
3. Build the smallest useful mental model.
4. Use examples, contrasts, and analogies only when they clarify.
5. Check for likely misconceptions.
6. Offer a small retrieval or application prompt when useful.
7. Suggest the next learning step.

## Learning Modes

### Concept Explanation

Use when the user asks "what is X", "explain X", or "I do not understand X".

## Output Rules

- Prefer clear, plain language over textbook density.
- Keep the first answer concise by default, usually 150-350 words and under 500 words.
- Use at most 2-4 short sections unless the user asks for depth.
- Do not dump a full lecture when the user is stuck on one concept.
- Do not expose method names such as Feynman, retrieval practice, or zone of proximal development unless naming the method helps the user.
- Prefer conversational teaching over course-note formatting.
- Use one highest-leverage question only when the learning goal or level is unclear.
- When the user asks for direct explanation, explain first, then ask a check question.
- Make the next step small and concrete.

## First Questions

Ask one question at a time.

Start with the highest-leverage unknown:

- "What part feels unclear right now?"
- "Do you want intuition, a formal definition, examples, or practice?"
- "What do you already know about it?"
- "What do you need to do with this knowledge: read, explain, use, or remember it?"

If the user provides enough context, skip the question and teach directly.

## Common Mistakes

- Answering with a long encyclopedia entry.
- Confusing learning help with content creation.
- Confusing learning help with technical implementation.
- Routing a technical term to technical analysis when the user's verb is "understand", "learn", "explain", or "I do not get it".
- Asking a quiz before giving the user any foothold.
- Hiding uncertainty when source material is missing.
- Using analogies that are memorable but misleading.
- Treating "I do not understand" as laziness instead of a signal to rebuild the model.
