# Chen Xiangming Education Research Methods 2013

> Plan, conduct, report, and appraise educational research using the 2013 教育研究方法 textbook edited by Chen Xiangming and jointly written by major Chinese universities. Use when choosing among positivist, interpretive, and integrated approaches; developing a topic, literature review, design, data plan, and report; or applying philosophical inquiry, surveys, educational measurement, experiments, statistics, qualitative inquiry, narrative inquiry, case study, historical research, action research, or comparative education. Match method to question and paradigm, make evidence and inference auditable, and verify current statistical, ethical, reporting, and policy standards.

# Education Research Methods (Chen Xiangming, 2013)

Use a practice-first sequence: define a worthwhile educational problem, choose the kind of claim required, align paradigm and method, produce evidence under explicit quality and ethics controls, and report only what the design warrants.

## Method router

| Needed claim | Primary route |
|---|---|
| Clarify a concept, value, premise, or argument | Philosophical inquiry |
| Estimate prevalence, distribution, attitudes, or relations | Survey and measurement |
| Estimate an intervention's causal effect | Experiment or strong quasi-experiment |
| Summarize samples or quantify uncertainty | Educational statistics |
| Understand meaning, experience, context, or process | Qualitative inquiry |
| Study experience through stories and their construction | Narrative inquiry |
| Explain a bounded contemporary case in depth | Case study |
| Reconstruct change and causation over time | Historical research |
| Improve practice through practitioner inquiry cycles | Action research |
| Explain educational similarities and differences across systems | Comparative education |
| Answer linked questions requiring different evidence | Integrated/mixed approach |

Read [chapters/ch01-research-cycle-and-philosophy.md](chapters/ch01-research-cycle-and-philosophy.md) before choosing. Methods may be combined only when each answers a defined part of the question.

## Workflow

1. **Specify problem and contribution.** Turn a topic into a bounded question; identify educational importance, novelty, feasibility, affected groups, and the claim needed.
2. **Review knowledge.** Search reproducibly, assess source quality, synthesize agreements, conflicts, mechanisms, contexts, and gaps; derive a conceptual framework rather than a bibliography list.
3. **Declare paradigm and logic.** State assumptions, values, unit, variables or concepts, and whether reasoning is deductive, inductive, abductive, interpretive, critical, or mixed.
4. **Select design.** Match question to the router and document why alternatives are insufficient.
5. **Operationalize and sample.** Define constructs, cases or population; choose sampling logic; plan instruments or protocols; protect inclusion and access.
6. **Plan quality and ethics before collection.** Anticipate bias, validity threats, uncertainty, power, consent, privacy, risk, and stopping rules.
7. **Collect and manage evidence.** Use standardized procedures where required and reflexive documentation where interaction matters; maintain provenance and secure data.
8. **Analyze according to design.** Read [ch02](chapters/ch02-survey-measurement-experiment-statistics.md) for quantitative routes and [ch03](chapters/ch03-qualitative-narrative-case-history.md) for interpretive routes.
9. **Integrate or act where appropriate.** Read [ch04](chapters/ch04-action-comparative-and-integration.md).
10. **Audit inference.** Separate observation, estimate, interpretation, causal claim, evaluation, transfer, and recommendation. Read [ch05](chapters/ch05-quality-ethics-and-reporting.md).
11. **Report transparently.** Connect each conclusion to evidence, analysis, assumptions, uncertainty, limitations, and educational implications.

## Required output

Provide problem, question, purpose, paradigm, claim type, conceptual framework, design rationale, unit and sampling, operational definitions or case boundary, data and analysis plan, validity/credibility threats, ethics, reporting structure, limitations, and decision rules.

Use [patterns.md](patterns.md), [cheatsheet.md](cheatsheet.md), and [glossary.md](glossary.md).

## Guardrails

- Do not choose a method from fashion, convenience, software, or labels alone.
- Do not call philosophical assertion, experience summary, or literature compilation a completed empirical study.
- Do not infer causation from correlation or a simple pre/post change.
- Do not treat reliability as validity, statistical significance as practical importance, or a scale score as the construct itself.
- Do not claim representativeness without a defensible sampling frame and response analysis.
- Do not treat qualitative research as casual interviewing or claim statistical generalization from purposive cases.
- Do not call a teacher activity “action research” without systematic evidence, reflection, revision, and ethical responsibility.
- Do not compare countries as isolated national essences; test comparable concepts and historical contexts.
- Use current ethics review, child safeguarding, privacy/data-security, accessibility, statistical, and reporting standards; the source is a 2013 introductory textbook.
