# Chen Xiangming Qualitative Research

> Design, conduct, analyze, write, and appraise qualitative social-science research using Chen Xiangming's 质的研究方法与社会科学研究. Use when aligning qualitative questions with epistemology and methods; building an interactive design; choosing purposive samples; negotiating researcher–participant relations and field entry; conducting interviews, focus groups, observation, or artifact analysis; coding and building contextualized interpretations or grounded theory; writing thick, reflexive accounts; or evaluating validity, inference, ethics, action research, and qualitative–quantitative combinations. Keep claims situated, make the researcher's role visible, and do not turn flexible inquiry into an unprincipled or mechanical recipe.

# Chen Xiangming's Qualitative Research Practice

Treat qualitative research as situated, relational meaning-making based on original material and reflexive interpretation. Method is not a free-standing technique: research question, purpose, conceptual frame, sample, relationship, collection, analysis, quality, inference, ethics, and representation must continually inform one another.

## Core commitments

- Seek participants' meanings and the processes by which meaning is produced in context.
- Recognize researcher and participants as mutually influencing subjects.
- Build interpretation from rich material while examining prior concepts and power.
- Prefer depth, process, difference, and conditional explanation over premature generalization.
- Document decisions so flexibility remains rigorous and auditable.

## Workflow

1. **Declare the methodological position.** State what counts as reality, knowledge, understanding, and warranted interpretation in this study. Do not select qualitative research merely because the sample is small. Read [chapters/ch01-position-and-design.md](chapters/ch01-position-and-design.md).
2. **Build an interactive design.** Align phenomenon, questions, personal/practical/scientific purposes, literature and experiential knowledge, conceptual frame, sample, relationships, methods, quality, ethics, and writing. Revisit every component when one changes.
3. **Sample for information.** Choose cases because they illuminate the question; name the purposive-sampling logic and its limits. Read [chapters/ch02-sampling-reflexivity-and-entry.md](chapters/ch02-sampling-reflexivity-and-entry.md).
4. **Practice positional reflexivity.** Record how identity, biography, assumptions, role, access, emotion, power, and relationships shape what can be known.
5. **Enter and negotiate the field.** Distinguish gatekeeper permission from participant consent. Make role, recording, confidentiality, withdrawal, reciprocity, and changing conditions explicit.
6. **Collect dialogically.** Use interviews, focus groups, observation, and artifacts according to the question; distinguish observation, participant account, researcher inference, and reflection. Read [chapters/ch03-data-generation.md](chapters/ch03-data-generation.md).
7. **Analyze from the start.** Organize and read material, write memos, code, find local concepts, compare, classify, reconstruct context and process, test alternatives, and direct further collection. Read [chapters/ch04-analysis-and-theory.md](chapters/ch04-analysis-and-theory.md).
8. **Construct bounded claims.** Keep description, participant interpretation, researcher interpretation, theory, evaluation, and transfer claims distinct.
9. **Write reflexively.** Give sufficient context and evidence, show the interpretive path, examine voice and representation, protect participants, and write for an identified audience.
10. **Run a quality–ethics audit.** Evaluate each claim in relation to the study's paradigm and purpose; investigate disconfirming evidence, research reactivity, cultural presupposition, memory limits, indirect sources, and power. Read [chapters/ch05-quality-inference-and-ethics.md](chapters/ch05-quality-inference-and-ethics.md).
11. **Use action or mixed approaches only with a rationale.** Define how participation, action, reflection, and/or quantitative components answer linked questions. Read [chapters/ch06-action-and-method-combination.md](chapters/ch06-action-and-method-combination.md).

## Required output

Provide a question–purpose–method alignment; methodological position; interactive design map; purposive-sampling rationale; researcher positionality; relationship and field-entry plan; data-generation protocol; concurrent analysis and audit trail; quality threats and responses; inference boundary; ethics and reciprocity plan; writing/representation choices; and next-decision rules.

Use [patterns.md](patterns.md) and [cheatsheet.md](cheatsheet.md).

## Guardrails

- Do not equate qualitative research with impression, anecdote, unstructured conversation, or the absence of numbers.
- Do not claim neutrality by hiding the researcher; reflexivity means investigating influence, not celebrating subjectivity.
- Do not let a gatekeeper consent on behalf of participants.
- Do not call convenience sampling purposeful without stating the compromise.
- Do not begin coding only after collection if iterative analysis can improve sampling and questioning.
- Do not confuse participants' words with transparent access to truth; preserve voice while interpreting context and interaction.
- Do not claim statistical representativeness from purposive samples.
- Do not use triangulation, participant feedback, or saturation as ritual badges; show what each actually tested.
- Do not combine qualitative and quantitative methods unless questions, assumptions, sequence, integration, and inferential boundaries are coherent.
- Verify current institutional review, privacy, safeguarding, data-security, and disciplinary requirements; the book was published in 2000.
