# Creswell Guetterman Educational Research

> Plan, conduct, report, consume, and evaluate educational research using Creswell and Guetterman's Educational Research: Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Quantitative and Qualitative Research, sixth edition (2019). Use when moving through problem identification, literature review, purpose/questions/hypotheses, quantitative or qualitative data collection and analysis, reporting, and evaluation; or when selecting experimental, correlational, survey, grounded theory, ethnographic, narrative, mixed-methods, or action-research designs. Make design characteristics visible, distinguish producer and consumer checks, and update current ethics, statistics, technology, and reporting standards.

# Creswell–Guetterman Educational Research

Treat research as interrelated activities, not isolated techniques. Move through:

`problem → literature → purpose/questions/hypotheses → data → analysis/interpretation → report/evaluation`

At every step compare quantitative and qualitative choices. Then select one of eight design families or a justified adaptation.

## Eight-design router

| Research need | Design |
|---|---|
| Causal effect of an assigned intervention | Experimental |
| Degree/pattern of association or prediction | Correlational |
| Attitudes, practices, characteristics, trends | Survey |
| Explanatory theory of a process grounded in participant data | Grounded theory |
| Culture-sharing group's patterns and meanings | Ethnography |
| Individual experience through stories over time | Narrative research |
| Integrated quantitative and qualitative conclusions | Mixed methods |
| Practitioner/participant improvement through cycles | Action research |

Read [chapters/ch02-eight-designs.md](chapters/ch02-eight-designs.md). Do not pick a design from the data-collection tool alone.

## Workflow

1. **Identify a research problem.** Distinguish topic, practical problem, research problem, justification, deficiency in evidence, and audiences who benefit.
2. **Review literature.** Search, evaluate, organize, summarize, and synthesize; use it differently in quantitative and qualitative work. Read [chapters/ch01-research-process.md](chapters/ch01-research-process.md).
3. **Specify purpose and questions.** Quantitative studies define variables and often hypotheses; qualitative studies use central and subquestions about phenomenon and process; mixed studies need component and integration questions.
4. **Plan sampling and collection.** Quantitative routes define population/frame, probability selection, instruments, variables, and standardized procedures. Qualitative routes define sites/participants purposively, researcher role, protocols, text/image/audiovisual evidence, and field relations.
5. **Plan ethics and permissions.** Separate institutional/site permission, gatekeeper access, and participant consent/assent; protect vulnerable participants, privacy, and data.
6. **Analyze and interpret.** Quantitative analysis prepares data, describes, tests or models, reports estimates and uncertainty, and compares with literature. Qualitative analysis organizes, codes, develops descriptions/themes, represents findings, and validates interpretations. Read [chapters/ch03-data-analysis-and-interpretation.md](chapters/ch03-data-analysis-and-interpretation.md).
7. **Apply design-specific procedures.** Draw the design, chronology, samples, instruments/protocols, analysis, threats, and inference.
8. **Report for producers and consumers.** Read [chapters/ch05-reporting-and-evaluation.md](chapters/ch05-reporting-and-evaluation.md).
9. **If integrating or improving practice, expose the interface or action cycle.** Read [chapters/ch04-mixed-and-action-research.md](chapters/ch04-mixed-and-action-research.md).

## Required output

Provide problem and evidence deficiency; audience; literature strategy/synthesis; purpose; questions/hypotheses; design choice; participants/sample and site; data sources; procedures; analysis; validity/credibility; ethics; findings/interpretation plan; report structure; consumer-evaluation checklist; conclusion limits.

Use [patterns.md](patterns.md), [cheatsheet.md](cheatsheet.md), and [glossary.md](glossary.md).

## Guardrails

- Do not turn a broad topic into a question without identifying the evidence deficiency.
- Do not import quantitative hypotheses into exploratory qualitative designs or omit variables from quantitative questions.
- Do not confuse instrumentation with design, sample with population, association with causation, or prediction with explanation.
- Do not reduce grounded theory to coding, ethnography to observation, or narrative research to collecting stories.
- Do not mix by merely including numbers and quotes; integrate design, evidence, and inference.
- Do not call routine professional reflection action research without systematic cycles, evidence, participation, and accountability.
- Do not rely on one validity technique or evaluate every design with the same checklist.
- Update 2019 material for current privacy, AI/digital research, open science, statistics, accessibility, and reporting standards.
