# Migrant Family Parenting Qualitative

> Apply Zhao Juan's qualitative study of migrant-worker family parenting when analyzing parenting mechanisms, designing small-sample family research, interpreting interview evidence, or locating the study's findings and limits. Use for migrant-family education questions; do not generalize the 12-household case as a current population estimate.

# 流动人口家庭子女教养方式的质性研究

Use this skill to reason with the design and findings of Zhao Juan's study of 12 migrant-worker households in Nanjing. Treat its claims as case-bound qualitative findings, not universal facts about migrant families.

## Core analytic model

Analyze a case as a mechanism chain:

`structural conditions → family resources and relationships → parenting practice → child experience → observed or anticipated outcome`

Keep the links explicit. In this study, relevant conditions include migration status, exclusion from regular education, work schedules, housing and neighborhood conditions, parents' schooling, and unequal access to institutional support. Do not collapse these conditions into an alleged fixed “migrant culture.”

Use four interacting dimensions rather than assigning each family one parenting type:

1. **Growth guidance** — what parents prioritize and what practical guidance they can provide.
2. **Family climate** — communication, emotional support, couple relations, and shared activity.
3. **Control and feedback** — rules, monitoring, rewards, punishment, and responses when control fails.
4. **Educational expectations** — aspirations, perceived child ability, costs, uncertainty, and continued investment.

The dimensions influence one another. For example, long work hours may reduce communication and learning support; weak support can increase reliance on score-based rewards or punishment; repeated failure can lower expectations and lead to withdrawal from supervision.

## Working procedure

1. State whether the task is **research design**, **case interpretation**, **practice planning**, or **source reference**.
2. Identify the relevant dimension or dimensions and load only their chapter files.
3. Separate three layers:
   - **Evidence:** what participants or the researcher reported.
   - **Interpretation:** the mechanism proposed to connect evidence and outcome.
   - **Transfer:** what may be cautiously tested in another setting.
4. Produce a context–evidence–mechanism–boundary–action chain.
5. When proposing action, address structural constraints as well as parent behavior. Include school, community, time, access, and support conditions where relevant.
6. End with uncertainty: sample boundary, missing perspectives, historical setting, and what new evidence would change the conclusion.

## Evidence discipline

- Attribute findings to this study's 12 households and field site.
- Preserve participants' heterogeneity; report variation and contradictions.
- Treat the key informant and snowball sample as access mechanisms that may also shape who was included.
- Do not infer prevalence, causal effect size, or present-day conditions from this study alone.
- Do not portray low schooling, poverty, migration, or rural origin as personal deficiency.
- Describe corporal punishment as harmful conduct and a safeguarding concern; never normalize it as an inherent group trait.
- If applying the model today, request or seek current local evidence before making policy claims.

## Preferred output

For substantive analysis, return:

1. **Question and unit of analysis**
2. **Relevant evidence from the study**
3. **Mechanism map across the four dimensions**
4. **Alternative explanations or negative cases**
5. **Transfer limits**
6. **Practical or research next steps**

Distinguish the study author's conclusions from your own extensions.
