# Engineering Scorecards

## Overview

Scorecards provide a structured way to assess services or teams against agreed standards (reliability, security, documentation, operability, etc.) and drive improvement.

## When to Use

- Establishing production readiness or maturity standards
- Making service health visible across a portfolio
- Guiding investment in technical improvements

## Practices

- Choose a small number of meaningful dimensions
- Make criteria objective and automatable where possible
- Use scorecards for prioritization and support, not punishment
- Review and evolve the scorecard as the organization learns
- Pair scores with clear ownership and next actions

## Principles

- What gets measured influences behavior — choose carefully
- Visibility should lead to support and improvement, not blame
- Prefer trends and system-level insight over individual ranking
