# Product-Market Fit

## Overview

Product-market fit (PMF) means a specific market strongly wants your product. Scaling before PMF amplifies waste; ignoring PMF signals delays success.

## When to Use

- Early-stage products deciding whether to persist, pivot, or kill
- Evaluating readiness to invest in growth
- Diagnosing stagnant adoption or high churn
- Communicating maturity and risk to leadership/investors

## Signals of PMF

- Strong retention relative to category norms
- Organic demand and word-of-mouth
- Users expressing significant disappointment if the product disappeared
- Willingness to pay and expand
- Clear, repeated use cases among a defined segment

## Principles

- PMF is segment-specific — fit with everyone is fit with no one
- Seek intense love from a narrow segment before broad mediocrity
- Use both qualitative intensity and quantitative retention/engagement
- Treat PMF as a continuum to strengthen, not a one-time checkbox

## Verification

- [ ] Target segment is explicit
- [ ] Evidence includes retention/engagement and qualitative pull
- [ ] Strategy differs appropriately before vs after PMF
