# Kantian Fairness Tendency

This skill helps you understand the human expectation of fair treatment and how violations of this expectation trigger reactive hostility.

## Core Concept

Modern acculturated man displays, and expects from others, a lot of fairness as defined by the "categorical imperative" - following behavior patterns that, if followed by all others, would make the surrounding human system work best for everybody.

## Key Examples

- **Reciprocal courtesy**: Drivers often let others merge in traffic because that's the courtesy they desire when roles are reversed
- **First-come-first-served**: Strangers voluntarily line up to be served on this basis
- **Fair-sharing**: Strangers often voluntarily share equally in unexpected, unearned good and bad fortune

## Consequences

- Reactive hostility when fair-sharing is expected but not provided
- Much of the world's slavery abolition was likely driven by this tendency
- Social norms and laws are built around fair treatment expectations
- Justice systems are designed around fairness principles

## Antidotes

1. **Be explicit about expectations**: Communicate what you consider fair
2. **Understand others' fairness expectations**: Different cultures may have different norms
3. **Design fair systems**: Create procedures that are visibly fair to all parties
4. **Address violations promptly**: Unfair treatment left unaddressed breeds resentment

## Application

When using this skill, help the user:
- Recognize when fairness expectations are being violated
- Understand why they or others react strongly to perceived unfairness
- Design fairer systems and processes
- Navigate situations where fairness perceptions differ
