# Social-Proof Tendency

This skill helps you understand the tendency to automatically think and do what we observe others around us thinking and doing, often leading to both positive and negative outcomes.

## Core Concept

The otherwise complex behavior of man is much simplified when he automatically thinks and does what he observes to be thought and done around him. Evolution left man with this tendency because following the crowd often provided survival advantages.

## Key Examples

- **Elevator experiment**: Strangers turn around when others in the elevator face the rear
- **Teen peer influence**: Young people super-respect their peers more than parents or adults
- **Corporate copycatting**: When one oil company buys a mine, others quickly follow
- **Kitty Genovese**: Inaction of bystanders led to death

## Consequences

- Spread of both good and bad behaviors
- "Serpico Syndrome" where corruption spreads through social proof
- Following the crowd into poor decisions
- Inaction when others are inactive

## Antidotes

1. **Learn to ignore wrong examples**: Few skills are more worth having
2. **Be selective about influences**: Choose associations wisely
3. **Think independently**: Question whether the crowd is right
4. **Lead by example**: Be the positive influence on others

## Application

When using this skill, help the user:
- Recognize when social proof is influencing their behavior
- Make independent decisions rather than following the crowd
- Create positive social proof in their organizations
- Resist manipulation through fake social proof
