# SEO Optimization

## When to Use
When trying to increase organic traffic through better search visibility — new pages, existing content improvement, or technical SEO fixes.

## Core Jobs

### 1. Keyword Research
Find terms your audience searches:
- Tools: Google Search Console (what you already rank for), Ahrefs/Semrush (competitors), Google Keyword Planner
- Target: keywords where you can realistically rank (look at current top-10 DR/authority)
- Categorize: informational ("what is X"), navigational ("X login"), commercial ("best X tools"), transactional ("buy X")
- Start with long-tail (lower competition, higher intent)

### 2. On-Page Optimization
Per page:
- **Title tag**: keyword first, under 60 chars, compelling click (not just keyword stuffing)
- **Meta description**: 150–160 chars, include keyword, CTA
- **H1**: one per page, includes primary keyword
- **URL**: short, keyword-rich, no parameters (`/keyword-phrase/`)
- **Content**: keyword in first 100 words, H2s cover related terms, 1000+ words for competitive terms
- **Internal links**: link from authority pages to this page
- **Images**: alt text describes content (helps accessibility and SEO)

### 3. Technical SEO
Checklist:
- [ ] Core Web Vitals: LCP < 2.5s, FID < 100ms, CLS < 0.1
- [ ] Mobile-friendly (Google's Mobile-Friendly Test)
- [ ] HTTPS (ranking signal)
- [ ] Sitemap.xml submitted to Google Search Console
- [ ] No crawl errors in GSC
- [ ] Canonical tags on duplicate or near-duplicate pages
- [ ] Structured data (schema.org) for key page types

### 4. Link Building
- Create link-worthy content (research, tools, unique data)
- HARO (Help a Reporter Out) for journalist mentions
- Guest posts on relevant blogs
- Fix broken links on sites linking to similar content
- Never buy links (Google penalty risk)

## Key Outputs
- Keyword research spreadsheet (by page/topic)
- On-page optimization checklist
- Technical SEO audit report
- Link building outreach log

## Anti-Patterns
- Targeting high-competition keywords when you have low authority
- Keyword stuffing (hurts rankings since 2011)
- Ignoring technical SEO while producing content
- Expecting results in 1–2 months (SEO is 3–6+ months)
