# Contract Test Creator

> Generates consumer-driven contract tests (Pact-style) verifying a consumer and provider agree on an interaction shape. Detects the repo's Pact tooling (pact-js, pact-python, Pact JVM, pact-go, Ruby pact) and whether a Pact Broker is configured, then writes either a consumer test (records expectations, produces a pact file) or a provider verification test (replays existing pact files against the real provider) for changed code (diff mode) or an existing coverage gap (backfill mode). # contract-test-creator

Writes **real, running consumer-driven contract tests** — never a schema diff, never an OpenAPI-spec
check. Two consumer/provider services agree on the shape of one interaction; this skill generates either a
**consumer** test (records the consumer's expectations, produces/updates a pact file) or a **provider
verification** test (replays existing pact file(s) against the real running provider). Detects the repo's
own Pact library and whether a Pact Broker is configured first, then writes tests that match. Two entry
modes: **diff** (changed code) and **backfill** (an existing coverage gap).

## Deliverable

New/modified contract test files (plus a written/updated pact file for a consumer target) matching the
repo's own conventions, plus **`CONTRACT_TEST_REPORT.md`** — spec:
[reference/report-format.md](reference/report-format.md). Per-target status (written & passing, written
but flags a probable production bug, needs observed usage, needs a human, already covered, skipped by the
file cap), verification summary, and any handoff findings. Rendering that report follows

## Non-negotiables

- `target.role` (`consumer` | `provider`) is **required** — HARD STOP at Inputs if absent; never infer it
  from file location or naming (see [gate-policy.md §1](reference/gate-policy.md#1-missing-or-malformed-target-reporoot-or-role)).
- Never fabricate an interaction's expected request/response shape from a guess — it must trace to real,
  observed usage (an actual call site, an existing client method, or a schema file the repo already has).
  Tag a target without one `NEEDS_OBSERVED_INTERACTION` instead
  ([gate-policy.md §5](reference/gate-policy.md#5-target-has-no-real-observed-interaction-to-derive-its-shape-from)).
- Never modify production code to force a failing test green — see
  [test-creation-principles.md §3](../../docs/skill-framework/shared/test-creation-principles.md#3-refactor-limits)
  and [§5](../../docs/skill-framework/shared/test-creation-principles.md#5-escalation-on-a-surfaced-production-bug).
- A provider verification failure against a real pact file is a finding, never something to silently fix
  by loosening the contract — see [gate-policy.md §6](reference/gate-policy.md#6-verification-surfaces-a-probable-production-bug).
- Never silently drop targets past `max_files_per_run` — always list what was skipped.
