# Paywall Strategy Framework

Data-driven paywall strategy for mobile apps. Covers model selection, category benchmarks, trial optimization, placement mapping, and compliance.

## Paywall Models

### Hard Paywall
Content locked immediately upon app open. User must subscribe to access anything.

- **Median conversion**: 12.11%
- **Top 10%**: 38.7%
- **Best for**: News, finance, productivity apps with clear immediate value
- **Risk**: High bounce rate if value prop is unclear
- **Rule**: Must have strong brand recognition or unique content

### Soft Paywall
Some content/features free, premium features behind paywall. Most common model.

- **Conversion**: Varies by category (typically 5-15%)
- **Best for**: Fitness, education, lifestyle, photo/video
- **Strength**: Users experience value before paying
- **Rule**: Free tier must hook users, premium must feel essential

### Freemium
Core app fully functional, advanced features premium.

- **Median conversion**: 2.18%
- **Best for**: Games, social, photo/video with network effects
- **Strength**: Maximum user base, viral potential
- **Risk**: Low conversion; need high volume
- **Rule**: 23% of conversions happen after 6+ weeks; patience required

### Metered
N free uses, then paywall. Hybrid between soft and hard.

- **Best for**: AI tools, translation, document editors
- **Strength**: Users prove value to themselves through usage
- **Rule**: Free quota must be enough to create habit but not enough to satisfy

## Trial Best Practices

### Duration
- 52% of all trials are 5-9 days
- 3 days: Games, impulse apps
- 7 days: Most categories (standard)
- 14 days: B2B, productivity, complex apps
- 30 days: Music streaming (industry norm)

### Conversion Timing
- Freemium: 23% of conversions happen after 6+ weeks
- Short trials: Higher conversion rate but smaller pool
- Long trials: Lower rate but users are more committed when they convert

### Plan Performance
- Weekly plans convert 1.7-7.4x better than annual
- Exception: Health & Fitness (annual dominates with 60.6%)
- Annual plans have best LTV despite lower initial conversion
- Monthly is the safe middle ground

### Trial Types
- **Free trial**: No charge until end. Highest conversion. Most common.
- **Introductory offer**: Discounted first period ($0.99/first month). Good for price-sensitive markets.
- **Pay-up-front**: Charge at trial start, refund if canceled. Lowest volume, highest quality.

### Opt-in vs Opt-out
- **Opt-in** (user manually subscribes after trial): Lower conversion, higher satisfaction
- **Opt-out** (auto-renews after trial): Higher conversion, compliance-sensitive
- Apple requires clear disclosure for opt-out trials

## Paywall Placement Map

| Placement | Trigger | Best For | Conversion Impact |
|-----------|---------|----------|-------------------|
| Onboarding | App first open | High-intent (business, finance) | Highest if value is clear |
| Feature-gate | User taps locked feature | Most apps | Best balance of UX and conversion |
| Usage-limit | After N free uses | AI tools, news, metered | Users prove value to themselves |
| Session-count | After X app sessions | Games, education | Builds habit before asking |
| Time-delay | After N days | Lifestyle, utility | Shows value over time |
| Event-triggered | After achievement/milestone | Fitness, education, games | Capitalizes on motivation peak |

## Pricing Psychology

### Price Anchoring
Show the most expensive plan first. Users anchor to the high price and see other plans as deals.

### Charm Pricing
$9.99 converts better than $10.00. Always use .99 endings.

### Per-Day Framing
"$0.27/day" feels cheaper than "$99.99/year". Use for annual plan promotion.

### Savings Highlight
"Save 60% with annual" -- always show the percentage saved vs monthly.

### Decoy Effect
Three plans where the middle plan is intentionally less attractive to push users toward annual.

### Regional Pricing (PPP)
Adjust prices for purchasing power:
- Turkey: 40-60% lower
- India: 50-70% lower
- Brazil: 30-50% lower
- Southeast Asia: 40-60% lower
Use Apple/Google's regional pricing tiers.

## Compliance Requirements

### Apple App Store
- [ ] Restore Purchases button visible and functional
- [ ] Subscription terms shown: price, period, auto-renewal
- [ ] Cancel instructions accessible
- [ ] Privacy policy linked
- [ ] Terms of Service linked

- [ ] No dark patterns (hidden cancel, confusing copy)

### Google Play
- [ ] Subscription terms clearly displayed
- [ ] Cancel flow accessible
- [ ] Free trial terms stated upfront
- [ ] Grace period handling implemented
- [ ] Account hold support
