# Marketing Plan

Build an audience through free, authentic content before spending any money. Marketing is sales at scale.

## Use This Skill When

- User has ~100 paying customers (early product-market fit)
- User wants to scale beyond one-on-one sales
- User is building a content or audience strategy
- User needs help with social media, email, or content planning
- User says phrases like "marketing plan", "audience", "content strategy", "how do I grow", "customer acquisition"

## When NOT to Use

- User doesn't yet have 100 customers (use first-customers skill)
- User is looking for paid advertising optimization (use paid-ads skill)
- User is building a brand identity or logo (use branding skill)
- User is running a customer retention/upsell campaign (use retention skill)

## Context: Audience Growth Maturity

**Solo reach**: <1k followers/subscribers; only selling one-on-one
**Growing audience**: 1k–10k followers; some organic reach; word-of-mouth active
**Scaled audience**: 10k–50k followers; consistent engagement; mixed organic/paid traffic → **Target**
**Media brand**: 50k+ followers; recognized in industry; multiple content channels

## Prerequisites

Before launching marketing, confirm:
- ✓ You have identified your community
- ✓ You have a product people are paying for
- ✓ You have ~100 paying customers (repeat purchase = product-market fit)
- ✓ You've sold one-on-one and know what works
- ✓ You can articulate the core problem you solve

## Core Principle

**Marketing is sales at scale, not advertising.** Don't confuse spending money on ads with marketing. Real marketing is making fans through free, authentic content. The goal is to be helpful, not promotional. Start by spending time (writing, creating content) before spending money.

## Instructions

### Understanding the Customer Journey

Every customer goes through these stages:
1. **Encounter** — They find your content (social, blog, word-of-mouth, search)
2. **Engage** — They find it interesting/useful and follow
3. **Research** — They visit your website and learn about your product
4. **Evaluate** — They review pricing, features, reviews, comparisons
5. **Convert** — They become a customer

**Critical insight**: You cannot skip steps or accelerate them with ads. Every customer goes through all five, though faster with trust.

### Community vs. Audience

| Term | Definition | Size | Growth | Usage |
|------|-----------|------|--------|-------|
| **Community** | People who share interests with each other; you're a member too | 100–1k | Slow, organic, tight | Tight engagement, trust-based |
| **Audience** | Everyone you can reach when you have something to say | 1k–100k+ | Faster, broader | Loose engagement, awareness-based |

**Strategy**: Grow from community (intimate) → audience (broad) → customers (converting audience).

### Content Hierarchy: Three Levels

Progress through these levels in order. Each reaches a wider audience but requires more credibility.

#### Level 1: Educate
**Goal**: Share knowledge from your 100+ customers and business building

- Share lessons learned from customers and market
- Document your journey and decisions
- Don't be overly polished — consistency beats perfection
- Your early audience (community) will amplify the best ideas
- **Examples**: How-tos, lessons learned, frameworks, case studies

#### Level 2: Inspire
**Goal**: Motivate and engage beyond pure information

- Share struggles, failures, and vulnerabilities (not just wins)
- Tell the human story behind the business
- Build parasocial relationships (people feel they know you)
- **Examples**: Journey narratives, progress updates, personal reflections, behind-the-scenes

#### Level 3: Entertain
**Goal**: Reach far beyond your direct audience

- Humor, storytelling, or surprising insights
- Most viral content is entertaining, not educational
- Requires authenticity (audiences smell inauthenticity)
- **Examples**: Jokes, surprising observations, witty takes on industry trends, creative storytelling

**Progression**: Master Level 1 → Build audience → Attempt Level 2 → Add Level 3 strategically

### Social Media Strategy

#### Platform Selection
- **Pick one primary platform** where your audience lives (Twitter/X for tech, LinkedIn for B2B, Instagram for visual, TikTok for Gen Z)
- Create business account (distinct from personal, but authentic to you as founder)
- Only expand to secondary platforms after you have rhythm on primary

#### Posting Framework
- **Educate** (50%): Useful, actionable insights
- **Inspire** (35%): Personal journey, struggles, transparency
- **Entertain** (15%): Humor, observations, creativity

#### Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Generic content ("I'm grateful for my team") won't grow audience
- Self-promotion without value ("buy my product!") kills engagement
- Inactive accounts or long gaps between posts
- Trying to be everywhere; spread thin on multiple platforms
- Copying someone else's style instead of being authentic

#### Key Practices
- **Build in public**: Share what you're working on, what you learned, what you shipped
- **Respond authentically**: Reply to comments, engage in conversations
- **Share wins and losses**: Vulnerability builds trust faster than perfection
- **Ask for feedback**: Your audience has ideas for your product
- **Be consistent**: Post on a schedule (e.g., 2–3x per week on main platform)

### Email: The Owned Channel

**Why email is critical**: Social algorithms change, accounts get suspended, platforms shut down. Email is the one channel you truly own.

#### Building Your List
- Start collecting emails immediately (not after you "launch")
- Offer value in exchange: guide, checklist, course, exclusive content
- Place signup forms on website, in content, in emails (double opt-in)
- Aim for 1–5% of traffic → email subscribers

#### Email Content Strategy
- **Newsletter frequency**: Weekly, biweekly, or monthly (pick one and stick)
- **Content mix**: 60% educate, 30% inspire, 10% promote
- **Tone**: Personal, like writing to a friend (not corporate)
- **Value first**: Lead with useful content, mention products only at the end

#### Email as Owned Advantage
- Email subscribers are 10x more engaged than social followers
- Email has higher lifetime value (customers are more likely to repurchase)
- Use email to build deeper relationships with your audience

### Content Calendar

Build a sustainable, repeatable system:

**Template**:
```
WEEK 1: Educate + Entertain
WEEK 2: Inspire + Educate
WEEK 3: Educate + Entertain
WEEK 4: Email deep-dive content
Content channels:
- Primary platform: 2–3x per week
- Email newsletter: 1x per week or 2x per month
- Blog (if applicable): 2–4 per month
```

**Quality over quantity**: A weekly newsletter with real value beats daily tweets with nothing to say.

### Paid Advertising Decision Tree

```
Ready for paid ads?
├─ Do you have organic traction? (Consistent engagement, followers growing)
│  └─ NO → Focus on organic content first
│  └─ YES → Consider paid
│
├─ Do you know your customer profile? (Demographics, interests, pain points)
│  └─ NO → More organic testing needed
│  └─ YES → Proceed
│
├─ Is your LTV > CAC? (Customer lifetime value exceeds cost to acquire)
│  └─ NO → Improve unit economics first
│  └─ YES → Spend on ads
│
└─ What to spend on?
   ├─ Lookalike audiences (find people like existing customers)
   ├─ Remarketing (show ads to website visitors)
   ├─ Retention ads (special offers to existing customers)
   ├─ AVOID: Broad awareness campaigns until you have proven ROI
```

**Rule**: Don't spend more acquiring a customer than they're worth.

## Output

Create an actionable plan:

1. **Primary platform** (1–2 channels where you'll focus)
2. **Posting schedule** (frequency and day/time)
3. **Content themes** (5 topics per level: educate, inspire, entertain)
4. **Build-in-public strategy** (what you'll share from your journey)
5. **Email strategy**:
   - List-building mechanic (what's your lead magnet?)
   - Newsletter frequency and content mix
   - Signup placement on website/content
6. **First 12 content pieces** (specific topics for next 3 months)
7. **Engagement plan** (how you'll interact with audience)
8. **When to consider paid ads** (only after achieving organic traction)
