# Escape the Scroll

> It's 11pm. You're still scrolling. This isn't a blocker—it's a gentle redirect.

---

## When to Use

- It's late (10pm+) and you're still on Twitter/Reddit/YouTube/TikTok
- You've told yourself "just 5 more minutes" three times
- Screen time alert fired but you dismissed it
- You're not even enjoying it anymore, just... scrolling

**Trigger:** "I can't stop scrolling" or detected late-night usage pattern.

---

## Why Blockers Don't Work

App blockers get bypassed. You know this. You've:
- Deleted the app, redownloaded it 20 minutes later
- Set screen time limits, entered the passcode anyway
- Installed Freedom/Cold Turkey, found workarounds

The problem isn't access. It's that scrolling is the path of least resistance when you're tired but not ready to stop.

**This skill doesn't block. It redirects.**

---

## The Protocol

### Step 1: Acknowledge Without Judgment (10 seconds)

> "You're scrolling. That's fine. Your brain is tired and this is easy. Let's just check one thing before you continue."

No shame. No "you should be sleeping." Just a pause.

---

### Step 2: Tomorrow Morning Preview (30 seconds)

Calculate and show:

> "If you sleep now, you get **6.5 hours**. You'll wake up at 7:00 AM feeling: **okay, slightly groggy**."
>
> "If you scroll another hour, you get **5.5 hours**. You'll wake up feeling: **rough, need extra coffee, slower morning**."

**The math:**
- 7+ hours = "rested"
- 6-7 hours = "okay, slightly groggy"
- 5-6 hours = "rough, slower morning"
- <5 hours = "tomorrow is a write-off"

Ask: "What time do you need to wake up tomorrow?"

---

### Step 3: Surface Tomorrow's First Task (30 seconds)

> "Tomorrow morning, the first thing you wanted to do was: **[pull from calendar/todo if available, or ask]**"

If they have something important:
> "How do you want to show up for that? Rested or running on fumes?"

If nothing specific:
> "No big plans tomorrow. But future-you still exists. What would they thank you for right now?"

---

### Step 4: The Gentle Redirect (20 seconds)

Don't say "put down your phone." That doesn't work.

Instead, offer a **bridge activity**:

> "If you're not ready to sleep yet, here are better wind-down options:"
> - Put on a podcast/audiobook (eyes closed, phone face-down)
> - Switch to Kindle/book (still a screen but no infinite scroll)
> - Write 3 sentences about today (gets thoughts out of your head)
> - Stretch for 5 minutes (moves energy, signals body to wind down)

**Key insight:** The goal isn't "stop using phone immediately." It's "exit the scroll loop."

---

### Step 5: The Scroll Tax (Optional, for repeat users)

If they've triggered this skill 3+ times this week:

> "This is the 4th time this week you've been here past 11pm. Not judging—just noticing. What's the scroll giving you that you're not getting elsewhere?"

Common answers:
- "I'm avoiding something" → What?
- "I'm lonely" → Who could you text tomorrow?
- "I'm bored" → What used to excite you?
- "I don't know" → That's worth sitting with.

---

## What This Skill Doesn't Do

- Won't block apps (you'll just bypass it)
- Won't lecture you (shame doesn't work)
- Won't fix underlying issues (loneliness, avoidance, boredom)

This is harm reduction, not a cure. But sometimes a gentle redirect is all you need.

---

## Output

By the end, user should have:
1. A clear picture of tomorrow-morning-them
2. One reason to stop (or not—their choice)
3. A bridge activity if they're not ready to sleep
4. (If repeat) A question to sit with
