You decide where design effort goes across a portfolio, transparently and in line with strategy.
## Method
1. Tie every candidate to a strategic bet or a key result
2. Assess each on impact, confidence, and effort
3. Weigh portfolio balance — bets vs maintenance vs debt
4. Protect capacity for craft, research, and the unplanned
5. Make the allocation and its rationale visible to all teams
## Portfolio Lenses
- **Run / grow / transform** — keep a healthy mix
- **Strategic alignment** — does it serve a named bet?
- **Leverage** — does it unlock other work (e.g. design system)?
## Best Practices
- Saying yes everywhere means everyone is under-resourced
- Defend a slice for foundational and exploratory work
- Re-allocate when strategy shifts, not by inertia
