# Proposal Pricing

## Overview

This workflow produces a defensible pricing breakdown for a proposal run — line-item hours × rate, Good/Better/Best tiers, or value-based pricing tied to client outcomes. Rates calibrate from the seller's `pricing-history.json` and research benchmarks, with `default_hourly_rate` as first-run fallback. Every number ties to scope, rate, benchmark, or strategic choice; sanity checks flag too-cheap or too-expensive signals; discount modeling shows impact scenarios. Output is structured `pricing.json` appended to pricing history for future calibration.

**The non-negotiable:** pricing must be explainable. Never emit a random round number — every total decomposes to line items, tier logic, or value rationale with cited benchmarks where available.

**Module:** `paw-pa` — PawBytes Proposal Automation Suite.

**Args:** `--headless` / `-H` for non-interactive (uses `default_pricing_mode` and config defaults); optional run folder path; optional mode override (`line-item`, `tiered`, `value-based`).

## Resolution rules

- Bare paths and `{skill-root}` resolve from this skill's installed directory.
- `{project-root}` → the project working directory.
- `{memory-root}` → `{project-root}/.pawbytes/proposal-automation-suites`.
- `{run-folder}` → `{memory-root}/proposals/{slug}-{date}/`.

Config keys: `default_pricing_mode` (`line-item` | `tiered` | `value-based`, default `tiered`), `default_hourly_rate` (default `100` USD).

## On Activation

Load config from `{project-root}/.pawbytes/config/config.yaml` and `config.user.yaml` (`pa` section). If missing, mention `paw-pa-setup`, proceed with defaults. Honor `communication_language` and `user_name`.

Then:

1. **Find the run folder** — user path, or scan `{workspace_folder}/*/brief.md`, or ask.
2. **Read `brief.md`** — scope, budget, timeline, requirements, proposal type.
3. **Read research** — parse `research-dossier.html` sections (or `.md`) for `pricingBenchmarks` observations and client intel. If absent, warn: "Pricing will calibrate from history and defaults only."
4. **Read `pricing-history.json`** — past quotes for rate calibration (`references/rate-calibration.md`).
5. **Pick pricing mode** — user override, else `default_pricing_mode`, else ask (interactive). Load the mode reference:

## Build pricing

Follow the loaded mode reference to decompose scope into priced structure:

1. **Calibrate rates** — history first, then research benchmarks, then `default_hourly_rate`.
2. **Compute totals** — mode-specific math; document assumptions in `calibrationNotes`.
3. **Sanity check** — compare to benchmarks and brief budget; populate `sanityCheck`.
4. **Discount modeling** — at least two scenarios (e.g. 0%, 10%, 15%) in `discountModeling[]`.
5. **Write `pricing.json`** — validate against `references/pricing-json-schema.md`.

Write to `{run-folder}/pricing.json`.

## Append pricing history

After seller confirms (interactive) or immediately (`--headless`), append one entry to `{memory-root}/library/pricing-history.json`:

Create the file as `[]` if missing. Never overwrite history — append only.

## Close the loop

- Append `[pricing]` to `{memory-root}/daily/YYYY-MM-DD.md` with client, mode, total, sanity verdict.
- Handoff: `paw-pa-generation` reads `pricing.json`; orchestrator presents artifact in guided mode.
- Re-run note: power users can invoke this skill alone on an old `{run-folder}` to re-price without re-research.

## Principles

- **History beats defaults** once `pricing-history.json` has comparable entries.
- **Benchmarks cite sources** from research dossier in `sanityCheck.benchmarkSources[]`.
- **Tier anchoring** — middle tier is usually recommended; Good/Best frame value.
- **Value-based needs intel** — requires client outcome/value signals from brief or research; otherwise recommend tiered/line-item.
- **Budget respect** — if brief budget is below market, sanity check says so; offer scope trim, not silent underpricing.
