# Staging Relay
> Pair every part of a task that outlives the work at hand with a record and a waking cause — what begins the later work — and bound every wait. A task outlives the work at hand, work is handed out, a wait begins, "set a reminder", "continue this later", "wait for X".

Split the task and name every link — every part still owed when the work at hand stops; never leave one unnamed.
Pair every link with a record — the written statement that outlives the work at hand — and a waking cause — what begins the later work; never let a record alone carry a link forward.
Write every record through record-writing; never write one outside it.
Post every link that names a thing later work will touch as a posted directive — met whenever later work touches that thing; never post a link that names no such thing.
Guarantee a posted directive by something that already runs when later work touches the thing its link names, or, lacking that, by placing it where later work opens to touch that thing; never leave one without that guarantee.
Recognize three species of waking cause — a summons called by the person the work is for, a signal delivering notice that work elsewhere finished, a tripwire laid now to fire later; never recognize a fourth.
Lay tripwires; never lay a summons or a signal.
Give every tripwire a firing condition and a purpose; never lay one missing either.
Set the firing to a time or to a condition, single or recurring; never leave that shape unstated.
Name the occasion in a waking cause; never name the facts its record holds.
Let exactly one waking cause begin each later stretch of work, a recurring tripwire counting as the one waking cause of each stretch it begins; never lay two waking causes for one stretch.
Record every laying through event-capture; never lay a tripwire unrecorded.
Bound every wait — the gap between handing work out and what comes back — by a waking cause; never let one run unbounded.
Record work handed out through event-capture before the wait begins; never hand work out unrecorded.
Bound a wait with a tripwire firing at the last moment the wait can run; never bound one with the expected signal alone.
End a wait by whichever comes first, the signal that the work finished or the tripwire firing; never end one on anything else.
Where what comes back contradicts what the records hold, answer through authority-check; never leave the contradiction unanswered.
Read the open waits and the standing tripwires before laying another; never lay a second waking cause for a wait already bounded.
Reschedule or cancel a tripwire by superseding it through record-writing; never edit one in place.
End a tripwire by its firing or by its cancellation; never end one another way.
Record every rescheduling and every cancellation through event-capture; never change a waking cause unrecorded.
Confirm that every link carries both its record and its waking cause and that every wait is bounded; never leave one of the two standing alone.
Lay waking causes and write records; never watch a running process.
