# Webflow MCP + AI — Agent-Driven Visual CMS

## What it is
Webflow's AI platform gives coding agents structured access to Webflow sites through MCP, plus built-in AI tools for SEO, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), and code generation. Webflow was one of the first in the industry to launch an MCP server.

## Core Capabilities

### MCP Server v2
- **Data APIs + Designer APIs** — AI agents can now both read CMS content AND manipulate the visual canvas
- **Tools exposed:** site structure, CMS collections/items, page design, component management
- **Compatible with:** Claude, Cursor, Windsurf — any MCP client
- **Setup:** Connect via Webflow dashboard → MCP settings

### AI Assistant (Agentic)
- Conversational partner that understands your site, design system, and brand
- Orchestrates complex multi-step tasks
- Plan → Preview → Apply workflow (changes shown before committed)
- **Code generation:** create dashboards, booking tools, reusable code components
- **Status:** Rolling out to all customers. Code gen in beta.

### AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
- **Private beta:** April 13, 2026. Enterprise GA: coming soon.
- **Closed-loop system:**
  1. **Measure** — Webflow Analyze shows brand citation frequency in AI answer engines (ChatGPT first, more LLMs coming)
  2. **Recommend** — AEO agents surface broken links, stale schema, missing alt text, content gaps
  3. **Act** — agents push approved changes site-wide with review-before-publish step
- **Content optimization agents:** Coming soon — strengthen pages, identify gaps, generate on-brand drafts
- **AI credits consumed** per agent run (effective June 29, 2026)

## Pitfalls
- AEO is enterprise-only and consumes AI credits (not included in base plan)
- MCP server v2 (Designer APIs) is newer — fewer community examples than CMS-only v1
- Code generation in beta — not yet available to all plans
- Webflow is a closed platform — can't self-host or modify the AI layer
- AEO analytics currently only covers ChatGPT (more LLMs promised)
