# Competitive Landscape

Understand the competitive and alternative solutions landscape to inform positioning and differentiation.

## Context

You are mapping the competitive environment. If you have competitor research, pricing data, or feature comparisons, gather it. Your goal is to identify whitespace, moats, and positioning angles.

## Domain Context

- **Blue Ocean vs. Red Ocean (Kim & Mauborgne)**: Create uncontested market space
- **Positioning by substitutes (Michael Porter)**: Direct competitors and alternative solutions
- **Sustainable competitive advantage**: Moats that competitors can't easily replicate
- **Category maturity**: Emerging, growth, mature, commoditizing

## Instructions

1. **Map direct competitors**: Who else solves this specific problem?
2. **Map alternatives**: How do customers currently solve this (workarounds, adjacent tools)?
3. **Create feature comparison**: What do competitors offer? Pricing? UX?
4. **Identify moats**: What's hard to copy? Brand, network effects, data, switching costs?
5. **Assess market maturity**: Is this category emerging or saturated?
6. **Find whitespace**: What's not well-solved? Where's the gap?

## Output Artifact

Competitive landscape report (2-3 pages):
- Competitive matrix (features, pricing, positioning)
- Direct vs. indirect competitors
- Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities per competitor
- Identified whitespace
- Recommended positioning differentiation

## Anti-Patterns

- **Only looking at direct competitors**: Missing substitute solutions and alternatives
- **Feature checklist comparison**: Missing emotional/contextual positioning advantages
- **Ignoring moats**: Assuming you can compete on features alone
- **Stale analysis**: Not tracking competitive moves and new entrants
