# Consensus Building

Help groups reach decisions people can **live with**—without pretending everyone feels the same or hiding real disagreement.

## When to Use
- Cross-functional decisions, contentious tradeoffs, or when the team is stuck between “everyone agrees” and endless debate.

## Workflow
1. **Name the decision rule** up front (consensus, consent, majority, leader decides with input).
2. **Surface shared values** before debating tactics—often alignment is closer than it sounds.
3. **Map the disagreement precisely**: “What exactly do we disagree on?” Separate principles from implementation.
4. Use **gradients of agreement**: enthusiastic yes → acceptable → can live with it → needs more discussion → block (with reason).
5. When timeboxed, use **disagree and commit** explicitly: who owns the call, what will be tried, how you’ll revisit.
6. **Never treat silence as agreement**—check for abstentions and concerns.

## Examples
**Example 1:** Design vs. speed fight → separate “we must not harm trust” (value) from “ship MVP without dark patterns” (tactic) and pick a bounded experiment.

**Example 2:** Quiet room after the manager speaks → invite written input or round-robin so power dynamics do not fake consensus.
