# Game Identification

A methodology for recognizing the unspoken rules, roles, and reward structures that govern social situations. Based on the insight that most human interaction follows game-like patterns—complete with rules, players, winning conditions, and stakes—but participants rarely recognize they're playing.

## When to Use
- Entering a new social environment (job, community, relationship)
- Feeling stuck or frustrated in recurring patterns
- Navigating organizational politics
- Understanding why people behave in ways that seem irrational
- Deciding whether to participate in a system
- Designing better systems or interactions

## Core Principle

Every social context operates according to rules, but most rules are unspoken. People play games without knowing they're playing. They follow scripts they never consciously chose. They compete for prizes they never questioned wanting.

The word "game" isn't meant to trivialize. Games are serious. They consume lives. But calling something a game reminds us: games have rules, and rules can be learned, changed, or rejected. A "reality" feels fixed. A "game" invites choice.

## Workflow
### Phase 1: Identify the Game

Before you can play consciously, you must see the game.

### Step 1: **Name what people are competing for**


   - What's the scarce resource? (status, attention, money, approval, belonging)
   - What does "winning" look like in this context?
   - What does "losing" look like?

### Step 2: **Identify the players**


   - Who are the active participants?
   - Who sets the rules? (often not the same as who plays)
   - Who referees or judges outcomes?
   - Are there spectators? What role do they play?

### Step 3: **Map the roles**


   - What positions exist in this game?
   - What behaviors does each role require?
   - Are roles fixed or fluid?

### Step 4: **Discover the rules**


   - What moves are permitted?
   - What moves are forbidden?
   - What moves are technically permitted but socially punished?
   - Which rules are explicit? Which are implicit?

### Phase 2: Analyze the Game Structure

Understand how the game operates.

### Step 1: **Trace the reward structure**


   - What behaviors get rewarded?
   - What behaviors get punished?
   - Are rewards immediate or delayed?
   - Who distributes rewards?

### Step 2: **Find the entry requirements**


   - What must you have or be to play?
   - What's the cost of entry?
   - Can anyone start, or is access limited?

### Step 3: **Examine the win conditions**


   - How do you know when you've won?
   - Is it zero-sum (your win = their loss)?
   - Can multiple people win?
   - Is there an actual end, or does the game continue indefinitely?

### Step 4: **Identify the house advantage**


   - Who benefits from the game being played, regardless of who wins?
   - Who designed this game, and what were their interests?
   - Are the rules neutral, or do they favor certain players?

### Phase 3: Evaluate Your Position

Understand your relationship to the game.

### Step 1: **Recognize how you entered**


   - Did you consciously choose to play?
   - Were you born into this game? Recruited? Pressured?
   - Did you know the rules before entering?

### Step 2: **Assess your current position**


   - Where are you in the game's hierarchy?
   - What resources do you control?
   - What moves are available to you?

### Step 3: **Calculate the real costs**


   - What are you sacrificing to play?
   - What other games can't you play while playing this one?
   - What would you be doing if you weren't playing?

### Step 4: **Clarify your actual goals**


   - Is what you want available in this game?
   - Are you playing to win, or playing to play?
   - Does your strategy serve your actual goals or the game's goals?

### Phase 4: Choose Your Response

Once you see the game, you have options.

### Step 1: **Play consciously** - Continue playing, but with full awareness of the rules, costs, and alternatives. This transforms the experience even if the behavior looks similar.



### Step 2: **Play differently** - Accept the basic game but change your strategy, refuse certain moves, or redefine winning for yourself.



### Step 3: **Change the game** - Attempt to modify the rules. This requires either power or persuasion. Know that rule-changers are often punished by those invested in the current rules.



### Step 4: **Exit the game** - Stop playing entirely. Accept that the rewards of this game become unavailable to you. Find or create different games.



### Step 5: **Start a new game** - Design a game with better rules, invite others to play, compete with existing games for players.



## Examples of Application

### Example 1: Corporate Career Game

**The game:** Advancement up organizational hierarchy

**Players:** Employees, managers, executives, HR

**Winning looks like:** Promotions, titles, salary increases, visibility

**Unspoken rules:**
- Don't outshine your boss publicly
- Credit flows upward; blame flows downward
- Appearing busy often matters more than being productive
- Certain topics are undiscussable regardless of their importance
- The performance review criteria don't fully match the actual promotion criteria

**House advantage:** The company benefits from employees competing hard regardless of who wins any particular round

**Response options:**
- Play consciously: Pursue advancement while maintaining awareness that it's one game among many
- Play differently: Optimize for learning and relationships rather than pure advancement signals
- Exit: Leave corporate employment for entrepreneurship, different sector, etc.

### Example 2: Social Media Status Game

**The game:** Accumulation of followers, engagement, visibility

**Players:** Content creators, audiences, platforms, advertisers

**Winning looks like:** Viral posts, growing follower counts, being recognized

**Unspoken rules:**
- Controversy spreads faster than nuance
- Consistent posting matters more than quality posting
- Authenticity must be performed, which makes it inauthentic
- Engagement is measured in interactions, not in actual impact
- The algorithm's preferences override human judgment

**House advantage:** Platforms profit from engagement regardless of whether users feel fulfilled

**Response options:**
- Play consciously: Use platforms strategically for specific goals while recognizing the game
- Play differently: Post for your actual audience rather than the algorithm
- Exit: Stop participating; communicate through other channels

### Example 3: Academic Prestige Game

**The game:** Accumulation of scholarly credentials and reputation

**Players:** Researchers, journals, institutions, funding bodies

**Winning looks like:** Publications, citations, grants, positions

**Unspoken rules:**
- Quantity often outweighs quality in career advancement
- Novel claims get published; replications don't
- Negative results are rarely publishable
- Networking with gatekeepers matters as much as research quality
- Certain methodologies signal status regardless of appropriateness

**House advantage:** Institutions benefit from publish-or-perish regardless of knowledge generation

**Response options:**
- Play consciously: Publish strategically while maintaining research integrity
- Play differently: Pursue important questions regardless of publishability
- Change the game: Advocate for open science, different metrics, etc.

## Key Principles

1. **Seeing the game changes the game** - Awareness alone transforms your relationship to any game, even if your behavior looks the same.

2. **Most games are inherited, not chosen** - You were born into family games, cultural games, economic games. Recognizing what you didn't choose is the first step to choosing.

3. **Players protect games** - Those winning at a game resist changes to the rules. Expect resistance when you try to modify or exit games.

4. **Games nest within games** - Small games exist inside larger games. The workplace game is inside the career game is inside the economic game is inside the meaning-of-life game.

5. **Exit costs are real** - Refusing to play has consequences. Account for them honestly. The freedom of opting out isn't free.

6. **Game language liberates** - Calling something a "game" doesn't dismiss its importance. It reminds you that rules can be learned, bent, or rewritten.

7. **The biggest game is invisible** - The game you're most trapped by is the one you can't see as a game. It just looks like "reality."

## Anti-Patterns to Avoid

- **Game cynicism** - Concluding that because everything is a game, nothing matters. Games can be deeply meaningful.
- **Thinking exit is free** - Underestimating the real costs of refusing to play required games
- **Superiority from awareness** - Using game-seeing to feel better than "unconscious" players rather than to make better choices
- **Paralysis from analysis** - Analyzing games endlessly without ever choosing how to act
- **Ignoring your own games** - Spotting everyone else's games while remaining blind to your own
