# The Core of Gaming

Use these principles whenever you invent a Game, turn an idea into a build brief,
implement its mechanics, or decide whether it is actually entertaining. They are
the shared design foundation for Grotto Studio brainstorming and building.

## A Game creates meaningful challenge

A Game gives a player something they value, actions they can take, rules that
shape those actions, and resistance between intention and success. That
resistance is challenge. Fun often arises as the player reads a situation,
chooses or acts, sees the consequence, learns, and tries again with greater
understanding or skill.

Challenge does not have to mean punishment, stress, combat, or high difficulty.
It can be:

- **Execution:** timing, aim, movement, rhythm, precision, or dexterity.
- **Perception:** noticing motion, threats, opportunities, patterns, or hidden
  information.
- **Reasoning:** deduction, spatial thinking, memory, sequencing, or puzzles.
- **Strategy:** planning, positioning, resource allocation, and long-term
  tradeoffs.
- **Risk:** deciding when to push, retreat, spend, save, or gamble.
- **Social understanding:** coordinating, predicting, negotiating, bluffing, or
  competing.
- **Expression:** building, styling, improvising, experimenting, or pursuing a
  self-chosen ideal under useful constraints.
- **Discovery:** forming hypotheses about a world or system and testing them.

Choose one primary challenge. Add supporting challenges only when they reinforce
the same player fantasy. A Game with many unrelated mechanics often feels less
interesting than a small Game with one challenge that develops well.

## Define the playable promise

Before adding content, progression, economies, lore, or polish, state:

1. **Fantasy:** Who is the player, and what should they feel capable of doing?
2. **Verbs:** What two to four actions do they use most?
3. **Immediate goal:** What are they trying to accomplish right now?
4. **Obstacle:** What makes that outcome uncertain?
5. **Feedback:** How do they know what happened and why?
6. **Repeat:** Why is the next attempt, turn, wave, room, or decision different?

This is the core loop. The first version should make that loop playable quickly.
A small complete loop is a stronger foundation than broad unfinished feature
coverage.

## Make decisions matter

An option is meaningful when the player can understand its tradeoff and observe
its consequence. Avoid choices where one answer is always correct or every
answer produces the same result.

- Give strong options a cost, risk, timing constraint, or counterplay.
- Let short-term safety compete with long-term advantage.
- Make resources create decisions, not bookkeeping.
- Use randomness to create situations the player responds to; do not let it
  replace the player's decision.
- Look for dominant strategies that make every other mechanic decorative.

When a Game is about execution rather than strategy, the meaningful choice may
be *when* or *where* to act. When it is expressive, the constraint gives the
creation shape and makes alternatives interesting.

## Make cause and effect legible

At any important moment, the player should be able to learn:

- what they are trying to do;
- what actions are available;
- what changed;
- why it changed; and
- what they could try differently.

Important actions need immediate visual and auditory feedback proportional to
their importance. Animation, sound, particles, hitstop, easing, camera response,
and HUD motion should clarify mechanics and reward mastery. They amplify good
design; they cannot rescue a loop with no meaningful challenge.

Show goals and controls without a tutorial wall. Prefer a safe first interaction
that teaches through play, then introduce labels or hints only where observation
is not enough.

## Teach, test, then combine

Introduce a concept in a forgiving context, test it alone, and later combine it
with concepts the player already understands. Increase difficulty by changing
one major variable at a time:

- less time or space;
- faster or more varied threats;
- additional goals to balance;
- incomplete information;
- higher cost for mistakes; or
- combinations that demand a new plan.

Difficulty should ask for deeper understanding, cleaner execution, or better
decisions—not merely larger numbers. Alternate tension and release, novelty and
mastery, action and decision. Avoid sudden walls and flat repetition.

## Make failure useful

Failure should usually be attributable, fair, and quick to recover from. The
player should understand what caused it and believe another attempt could go
better.

- Preserve the learning earned by the failed attempt.
- Restart in one obvious action, normally within about two seconds.
- Avoid long unskippable downtime.
- Prevent softlocks and unwinnable states that are not clearly communicated.
- Use irreversible punishment only when it is central to the fantasy and the
  player knowingly accepted the risk.

A forgiving Game can still provide challenge through optimization, discovery,
expression, or optional mastery. Fair does not mean easy; it means the rules and
consequences are consistent enough to learn.

## Give play a shape

Support three time horizons when the scope allows:

- **Immediate:** responsive feedback for the current action.
- **Medium:** a visible goal for this encounter, level, run, or session.
- **Long:** a reason to return, such as mastery, discovery, progression, social
  standing, or a changing possibility space.

Progression should unlock new decisions, combinations, or expressions more
often than it merely inflates values. End a session on a clear result and make
the next possibility visible.

## Studio operating principles

For a first playable build:

- Put the first meaningful action within roughly 15–20 seconds.
- Keep the goal and controls visible without blocking play.
- Include at least one learnable challenge whose outcome responds to player
  behavior.
- Make both success and failure reachable and clearly different.
- Provide a one-action restart.
- Support keyboard and pointer/touch where the format permits.
- Prefer one polished loop over several shallow modes.

Before calling the Game complete, playtest the experience—not only the code:

1. Can a new player identify the goal and perform the first action?
2. Does the core action feel responsive and produce clear feedback?
3. Can the player explain why they won or lost?
4. Does difficulty develop the main challenge instead of only adding health or
   speed?
5. Is there an obviously dominant or non-interactive strategy?
6. Can rapid, repeated, simultaneous, or idle input break the Game?
7. Do restart, resize, mobile input, success, and failure paths work?
8. Does the Game invite one more attempt, decision, discovery, or creation?

## Brainstorming a Game

When no idea exists, propose three genuinely different small directions. Vary
the player fantasy and primary challenge, not just the theme. For each direction
state the verbs, loop, challenge, hook, and finishable first scope.

When a seed exists, develop it in this order:

1. fantasy;
2. primary verbs;
3. repeatable loop;
4. primary challenge;
5. meaningful decisions or mastery;
6. feedback and failure recovery;
7. escalation; and
8. smallest complete build.

Ask at most one question at a time. Remain in design conversation until the
creator chooses a direction. Turning an idea into a build brief should fill the
Studio composer for review; it must not automatically spend credit or start a
build.
