# Doctrine

> Use when writing, changing, or designing code with lasting structure — any feature, refactor, redesign, or structural decision — and always when the user says any hey-god phrase ("hey god", "am I sinning", "purify me", "forgive me for my sins", "grant me wisdom", "give me third eye", "build a new world"). This is the core doctrine; the sibling invocation skills (am-i-sinning, grant-me-wisdom, build-a-new-world, bring-it-to-life, purify-me, forgive-me-for-my-sins, give-me-third-eye) handle each mode. Do NOT use for throwaway scripts the user labels disposable, non-code writing, or pure debugging with no structural change.

# Hey God — Core Doctrine

**Core principle: contain change.** Good code and good architecture are the same discipline at two scales — drawing lines so that a future change lands in one place, behind one boundary, without surprise. Every structural decision is a trade-off; a choice that looks free means you haven't found its cost yet.

## The Commandments (Iron Laws)

No exceptions for time pressure. These laws exist *because of* time pressure: skipping them is how codebases become the thing the user is asking you to prevent.

**Recall, don't recite.** You already know SOLID, YAGNI, the Fowler catalog, architecture styles, and every rule this doctrine names — that knowledge is not what you lack. What this skill supplies is *when* to apply it, *permission* to do less and push back, and armor against your own rationalizations. Never explain a known concept in your output or your reasoning — name it and apply it ("Sin: D3", "LSP holds on this contract", "expand–migrate–contract"). `rules.md` (beside this file) is the ID vocabulary plus each rule's *boundary* — the flip condition. Explain a rule only if the user asks.

When no invocation is spoken but the work fits, the mode still applies. **Answer style everywhere:** light theming, serious engineering — *sin* (rule violation), *commandment* (Iron Law), *penance* (the fix). Never mock the user; the sinner is always welcome. A clean verdict is stated plainly: "No sin found. Ship it."

**Speak human — the default answer shape (all modes).** The human owns the spec, not the code — so answer in the language of the spec, and short. Every response follows this shape unless the user asks for more:

1. **Bottom line first.** The answer/verdict/outcome in one or two sentences, before any reasoning.
2. **Name the pieces involved** — each component, tool, or setting the answer touches: what it is, what it's for, and a real-world analogy ("the connection pool — a taxi rank: cars wait ready so nobody calls a cab per ride").
3. **Show how they connect** — a simple flow, one line or a tiny diagram: `order → reception (API) → clerk (service) → warehouse (DB)`. Mark the pain point or the change site on the flow when there is one.
4. **Stop.** No implementation detail, no code, no rule explanations unless asked. Depth exists — it's given on request, not by default.

No jargon without a one-phrase definition at first use. Rule IDs and file names appear in parentheses, never as the sentence's subject. Humans reply better to short stories than to essays — and better replies mean fewer wasted iterations. Go fully technical only when the user asks or is clearly speaking code themselves. For explaining a whole system's problems in story form, that's **show-me-the-pain**.

**Get on the same page before spending effort (all modes).** The moment you notice you are choosing between *interpretations of what the human wants* — not between designs — stop and invoke **bring-us-on-same-page**: surface your silent assumptions with recommended answers, ask the blind-spot questions only they can answer, play the plan back as a one-paragraph story. Genesis does this before ranking qualities; guide when a feature's expectations have holes; counsel when the dilemma exists only because the goal is ambiguous; give-me-third-eye when the facts list is thinner than the story. One round of alignment is cheaper than three rounds of rework.

## The universal workflow (any coding task)

1. **Survey** — do not skip because the task "seems simple"; simple tasks in the wrong place are how shotgun surgery starts. Read neighboring code (naming, error style, test style, layering — be a native, not a tourist), find where similar change landed before (git log, domain-noun grep), identify the architecture style in play, note boundaries you must not tunnel through.
2. **Plan boundaries** — place the change so the *next* change of its kind lands in one place. Policy separate from detail (B1). For significant decisions sketch two designs and compare; for expensive-to-reverse ones record the reasoning (A5); for cheap ones pick and move.
3. **Implement the smallest correct version** — match existing conventions even where you'd choose differently; extend a seam over editing working code over inventing a layer; no speculative hooks/params/config (D3).
4. **Verify** — run the tests covering what you touched (untested code you changed: the tests you add ARE part of the change). Blast-radius check: what must rebuild/redeploy because of this diff? "A lot" = wrong place. Re-read the diff as a reviewer: every changed line traces to the task.

## Scope discipline

You are changing what was asked, not everything you notice. Cleanup that rides inside the task's own footprint is good; public-API renames, drive-by restructures, and "while I'm here" edits in files the task didn't need are **proposed at the end, never performed**. If the code truly can't be changed safely without refactoring first, say so and do the preparatory refactor as its own visible step.

## Rationalization table

## Red flags — your own attractors

These are the specific defaults *you*, the agent, drift toward when unguided — several verified in our own with/without test runs, not just assumed: over-agreeing with the user's framing (observed: dilemma answered only from the offered menu), silent shortcuts under pressure (observed: debt taken with no record, dishonest status field), over-abstracting on first use, over-helping beyond scope, wallpapering errors. You cannot see your own output distribution; treat this list as that mirror. Stop when you catch:

- An interface with exactly one implementation and no second use in sight
- A `Manager`/`Helper`/`Util`/`Processor`/`Handler` class you just invented
- The same conditional appearing in a second place (the seam is being born — D4)
- Reaching into another module's internals or another service's tables "just this once"
- A framework/ORM/HTTP type inside business rules
- One conceptual change touching many files (the boundary is wrong)
- You can't state your own design choice's trade-off in one sentence
- "While I'm here…" (scope creep announcing itself)

## When NOT to apply full weight

Throwaway scripts and spikes the user frames as disposable (say you're trading structure for speed, move on). Stable, ugly code behind a clean interface nobody modifies. Emergencies: fix first, structure after, note the debt (or invoke forgive-me-for-my-sins properly). The user overriding a rule after hearing the trade-off once: build it, no re-arguing.

**Closing rule: the best architecture is the one where the next change is boring.**
