# useReducer Patterns

## When to Use useReducer

**Use `useReducer` when:**
- Multiple related state values
- Complex state update logic
- Next state depends on previous state
- State transitions follow patterns

**Use `useState` when:**
- Simple independent values
- Basic toggle or counter logic
- No complex interdependencies

## Basic Pattern

```javascript
import { useReducer } from 'react';

const initialState = { count: 0, step: 1 };

function reducer(state, action) {
  switch (action.type) {
    case 'increment':
      return { ...state, count: state.count + state.step };
    case 'decrement':
      return { ...state, count: state.count - state.step };
    case 'setStep':
      return { ...state, step: action.payload };
    case 'reset':
      return initialState;
    default:
      throw new Error(`Unknown action: ${action.type}`);
  }
}
