# Image Generation Model Compatibility Fix

**Version Implemented:** 0.229.001

## Issue Description

Users experienced a `404 (NOT FOUND)` error when using the `gpt-image-1` model for image generation, while `dall-e-3` worked correctly. The error manifested as:

## Root Cause Analysis

The issue had multiple contributing factors:

1. **API Version Incompatibility**: The default API version (`2024-05-01-preview`) did not support the newer `gpt-image-1` models
2. **Null URL Handling**: When image generation failed or returned null URLs, the frontend attempted to load `src="null"` causing 404 errors
3. **Insufficient Error Handling**: Limited validation and debugging information for image generation responses

## Technical Solution

### 1. API Version Update

**File**: `functions_settings.py`

```

### 2. Enhanced Image Generation Error Handling

**File**: `route_backend_chats.py`

Added comprehensive validation and debugging:

### Supported Models

- **gpt-image-1**: Now supported with API version `2024-12-01-preview`
- **Future models**: Framework supports new models through API version updates

## Testing

### Functional Test Coverage
Created `test_image_generation_model_compatibility.py` covering:
- API version configuration validation

### Test Cases
1. **API Version Test**: Validates correct API version for gpt-image-1 support
2. **Null URL Test**: Tests various null/empty URL scenarios
3. **Response Validation Test**: Tests different image generation response formats
4. **Version Test**: Confirms version was properly incremented

## Configuration Requirements

### For gpt-image-1 Models
1. **API Version**: Must be `2024-12-01-preview` or later
2. **Model Deployment**: Deploy `gpt-image-1` model in Azure OpenAI
3. **Endpoint Configuration**: Standard Azure OpenAI image generation endpoint

### Admin Settings
Navigate to **Admin Settings > Image Generation** and:
1. Set API version to `2024-12-01-preview`
2. Fetch and select the `gpt-image-1` model
3. Test the connection using the "Test Image Generation" button

## Error Handling Improvements

### Server-Side
- Enhanced debugging output for image generation failures
- Structured error messages with specific failure reasons
- Comprehensive response validation before saving to database

### Client-Side
- Graceful handling of null/invalid image URLs
- User-friendly error messages instead of broken images
- Fallback error images for failed loads

## Future Considerations
