# Native Task Integration Evaluation Report

**POC**: poc-1769186747
**Date**: 2025-01-23
**Status**: ✅ Complete
**Related**: TASK-34
**Author**: Claude (Opus 4.5)
**Confidence**: High (empirically verified)

---

## Executive Summary

**Recommendation: DO NOT INTEGRATE**

Native task tools (`TaskCreate`, `TaskUpdate`, `TaskGet`, `TaskList`) are **not available** in the current Claude Code environment. The POC hypothesis was based on theoretical tools that do not exist in practice.

### Key Findings

| Aspect | Finding |
|--------|---------|
| Tool Availability | ❌ Not available |
| Alternative | ✅ TodoWrite + NAVIGATOR_STATUS |
| Integration Path | None |
| Value Gap | None identified |

---

## 1. Native Task Capabilities

### Finding: Tools Do Not Exist

Tested availability of:
- `TaskCreate` - **NOT AVAILABLE**
- `TaskUpdate` - **NOT AVAILABLE**
- `TaskGet` - **NOT AVAILABLE**
- `TaskList` - **NOT AVAILABLE**

**Current available tools** (confirmed in session):
- `Task` - Spawns subagents for complex work
- `TaskOutput` - Retrieves output from background tasks/agents
- `TodoWrite` - In-conversation task list management
- Standard tools: Bash, Read, Write, Edit, Grep, Glob, etc.

### Conclusion

The premise of TASK-34 (native task tools in Claude Code v2.1.16+) appears to be either:
1. A misunderstanding of Claude Code's architecture
2. A planned feature that was never implemented
3. Tools available only in different Claude Code configurations

---

## 2. TodoWrite Comparison

Since native task tools don't exist, this becomes the primary in-session tracking mechanism.

### TodoWrite Capabilities

| Feature | TodoWrite |
|---------|-----------|
| Create tasks | ✅ Via `todos` array |
| Track status | ✅ pending/in_progress/completed |
| Multiple tasks | ✅ Array of objects |
| Dependencies | ❌ Not supported |
| Persistence | ❌ Session-only (conversation) |
| UI visibility | ✅ Shows in Claude Code sidebar |

### TodoWrite Strengths
- Simple, declarative API
- Visible in UI
- Works with Navigator WORKFLOW CHECK

### TodoWrite Limitations
- No dependency tracking (blockedBy/blocks)
- Requires full array rewrite on each update
- No individual task IDs

---

## 3. Navigator Integration Assessment

### Current State (Without Native Tasks)

Navigator already has effective workflow tracking:

1. **WORKFLOW CHECK block** - Mandatory visibility for mode detection
2. **NAVIGATOR_STATUS blocks** - Loop Mode iteration tracking
3. **TodoWrite** - In-conversation task lists
4. **`.agent/tasks/`** - Persistent documentation

### Value Analysis

| Proposed Feature | Alternative | Value Add |
|-----------------|-------------|-----------|
| TaskCreate for Loop Mode | NAVIGATOR_STATUS block | **None** - inline blocks work |
| TaskUpdate for phases | WORKFLOW CHECK | **None** - already enforced |
| TaskGet/List for status | TodoWrite | **None** - equivalent |

### Verdict

No gap exists that native tasks would fill. Navigator's current system provides:
- **Visibility** via inline status blocks
- **Persistence** via `.agent/tasks/`
- **Session tracking** via TodoWrite

---

## 4. Recommendation

### Decision: DO NOT INTEGRATE

**Rationale**:

1. **Tools don't exist** - Cannot integrate what isn't available
2. **No value gap** - Navigator already has equivalent functionality
3. **Zero implementation path** - No API to call

### Actions

1. **Close TASK-34** - Mark as "Won't Do" with reason "Native task tools not available in Claude Code"
2. **Archive this POC** - Keep for future reference
3. **Monitor Claude Code releases** - If tools appear in future, re-evaluate

---

## 5. Future Considerations

If Claude Code introduces native task tools:

### Re-evaluation Triggers
- Claude Code release notes mention TaskCreate/TaskUpdate/etc.
- New tool definitions appear in environment
- Claude documentation describes task management API

### Integration Criteria (If Tools Appear)
- Must provide value over TodoWrite + NAVIGATOR_STATUS
- Must not conflict with WORKFLOW CHECK enforcement
- Must justify complexity increase

---

## Decision Criteria Results

| Criterion | Weight | Result |
|-----------|--------|--------|
| UX improvement | High | **N/A** - Tools unavailable |
| Complexity cost | High | **N/A** - No implementation possible |
| Workflow alignment | Medium | **N/A** - Cannot test |
| Conflict risk | Medium | **None** - No integration |
| Maintenance burden | Low | **Zero** - Nothing to maintain |

---

## Appendix: Tool Environment Snapshot

Available tools in current session:
```
- Task (subagent spawning)
- TaskOutput (background task output)
- TodoWrite (task list management)
- Bash, Read, Write, Edit, Grep, Glob
- WebFetch, WebSearch
- NotebookEdit, Skill, etc.
```

No TaskCreate, TaskUpdate, TaskGet, TaskList found.

## API Documentation

### Available Tools (Claude Code v2.1.16+)

```typescript
/**
 * Task Tool - Spawns subagents for complex, multi-step work
 * @param {string} description - Short summary (3-5 words)
 * @param {string} prompt - Detailed task description
 * @param {string} subagent_type - Agent type: "Bash" | "Explore" | "Plan" | etc.
 * @returns {AgentResult} - Summary from spawned agent
 * @example
 * Task({ description: "Search for auth", prompt: "Find authentication files", subagent_type: "Explore" })
 */
Task: (params: TaskParams) => AgentResult;
/**
 * TaskOutput Tool - Retrieves output from background tasks/agents
 * @param {string} task_id - ID of the background task
 * @param {boolean} block - Wait for completion (default: true)
 * @param {number} timeout - Max wait time in ms (default: 30000)
 * @returns {TaskOutputResult} - Task output with status
 */
TaskOutput: (params: TaskOutputParams) => TaskOutputResult;
/**
 * TodoWrite Tool - In-conversation task list management
 * @param {Todo[]} todos - Array of todo items
 * @returns {void}
 * @example
 * TodoWrite({
 *   todos: [
 *     { content: "Implement auth", status: "in_progress", activeForm: "Implementing auth" },
 *     { content: "Write tests", status: "pending", activeForm: "Writing tests" }
 *   ]
 * })
 */
TodoWrite: (params: TodoWriteParams) => void;
interface Todo {
  content: string;       // Task description (imperative)
  status: "pending" | "in_progress" | "completed";
  activeForm: string;    // Present continuous form
}
```

### Unavailable Tools (Contrary to TASK-34 Hypothesis)

```typescript
/**
 * @deprecated NOT AVAILABLE - Do not use
 * TaskCreate, TaskUpdate, TaskGet, TaskList tools
 * were hypothesized but do not exist in Claude Code
 */
TaskCreate: never;
TaskUpdate: never;
TaskGet: never;
TaskList: never;
```

## Usage Examples

### Example 1: Using TodoWrite for Loop Mode Tracking

```typescript
// Iteration 1
TodoWrite({
  todos: [
    { content: "Implement isPrime function", status: "in_progress", activeForm: "Implementing isPrime" },
    { content: "Write unit tests", status: "pending", activeForm: "Writing tests" },
    { content: "Commit changes", status: "pending", activeForm: "Committing changes" }
  ]
});
// After completing first task
TodoWrite({
  todos: [
    { content: "Implement isPrime function", status: "completed", activeForm: "Implementing isPrime" },
    { content: "Write unit tests", status: "in_progress", activeForm: "Writing tests" },
    { content: "Commit changes", status: "pending", activeForm: "Committing changes" }
  ]
});
```

## Comparison: Native Tasks (Hypothetical) vs Navigator Alternatives

| Feature | Native Tasks (N/A) | TodoWrite | NAVIGATOR_STATUS | .agent/tasks/ |
|---------|-------------------|-----------|------------------|---------------|
| Create tasks | ❌ Unavailable | ✅ Array of todos | ✅ Inline blocks | ✅ Markdown files |
| Track status | ❌ | ✅ 3 states | ✅ Phases + indicators | ✅ Full docs |
| Dependencies | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ (implicit) | ✅ (documented) |
| UI integration | ❌ | ✅ Sidebar | ✅ Conversation | ✅ File system |
| Persistence | ❌ | ❌ Session | ❌ Session | ✅ Git |
| Token cost | N/A | ~100/update | ~200/block | 0 (on-demand) |

---

## Re-evaluation Criteria

If native task tools become available in future Claude Code versions:

### Must Have
1. **Provide value over TodoWrite** - UI/UX improvement
2. **No workflow conflicts** - Work with WORKFLOW CHECK
3. **Session-persistence bridge** - Optional sync to .agent/

### Nice to Have
1. Dependency tracking (blockedBy/blocks)
2. Individual task IDs (vs array rewrite)
3. Progress visualization in UI

### Trigger for Re-evaluation
- Claude Code release notes mention TaskCreate/TaskUpdate
- New tool definitions appear in environment
- Community reports task management tools
