**Before generating ANY Bicep code, complete these checks:**

## Progressive Implementation Pattern

For complex infrastructure (multiple modules, many resources, or complex dependencies):

### Phase-Based Approach

**Phase 1: Foundation Resources**

- Resource groups
- Virtual networks (without subnets initially)
- Basic NSGs (empty rules)
- **Action:** Generate, validate (`bicep build`), deploy to Azure
- **Validation:** Verify resources exist with correct properties

### When to Use Progressive Implementation

- **Use for:** 10+ resources, multiple modules, complex dependencies, multi-tier applications
- **Skip for:** Simple infrastructures (single VNet, few resources, no complex dependencies)
- **Decision Rule:** If implementation plan has 3+ phases, use progressive approach

## Pre-flight: resolve output path

- Prompt once to resolve `outputBasePath` if not provided by the user.
- Default path is: `infra/bicep/{goal}`.
- Verify or create the folder before proceeding.

## Testing & validation

- Run `bicep restore` for module restoration (required for AVM br/public:\*)
- Run `bicep build {path to bicep file}.bicep --stdout --no-restore` to validate
- Run `bicep format {path to bicep file}.bicep` to format templates
- Run `bicep lint {path to bicep file}.bicep` to check for issues
- **Run security scanning**: `bicep lint --diagnostics-format sarif {file}.bicep` to check security issues
- After any command failure, diagnose and retry
- Treat warnings from analysers as actionable items
- After successful build, remove transient ARM JSON files
- **Validate tagging**: Ensure all resources have required tags (Environment, ManagedBy, Project)
- **Check module reusability**: Search workspace for similar modules before creating new ones

## The final check

- All parameters (`param`), variables (`var`) and types are used; remove dead code
- AVM versions or API versions match the implementation plan
- No secrets or environment-specific values hardcoded
- The generated Bicep compiles cleanly and passes format checks

## CAF & WAF Validation Checklist

Before finalizing implementation, verify:

**Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF):**

- [ ] All resource names follow CAF pattern: `{type}-{workload}-{env}-{region}-{instance}`
- [ ] Region abbreviations used correctly (swc, gwc, weu, neu)
- [ ] All resources have required tags: Environment, ManagedBy, Project, Owner
- [ ] Location parameters default to `swedencentral`
- [ ] Secondary region parameter available for DR scenarios (if applicable)
- [ ] Resource groups follow naming: `rg-{workload}-{environment}-{region}`
- [ ] Unique suffix generated from `resourceGroup().id` and passed to all modules

**Well-Architected Framework (WAF):**

## Best Practices

### Code Style & Structure

- Use lowerCamelCase for all names (variables, parameters, resources)
- Use resource type descriptive symbolic names
- Always declare parameters at the top with @description decorators
- Use latest stable API versions for all resources (or AVM latest versions)
- Set default values that are safe for test environments
- Use symbolic names for resource references instead of reference() functions
- Never include secrets or keys in outputs
- Include helpful comments within Bicep files

### Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) Compliance

**Naming Conventions (MANDATORY):**
Follow CAF pattern: `{resourceType}-{workload}-{environment}-{region}-{instance}`

### Well-Architected Framework (WAF) Implementation

**Security (Required Defaults):**

- HTTPS only: `supportsHttpsTrafficOnly: true`
- TLS 1.2 minimum: `minimumTlsVersion: 'TLS1_2'`
- No public access: `allowBlobPublicAccess: false` (storage), `publicNetworkAccess: 'Disabled'` (SQL, Key Vault)
- Managed identities: Prefer over connection strings/keys
- Private endpoints: Use for data services (SQL, Storage, Key Vault, Cosmos DB)
- Network isolation: NSGs with deny-by-default rules (priority 4096)
- Encryption: Enable at rest (TDE, SSE) and in transit

**Reliability:**

- Zone redundancy: Enable where supported (SQL, Storage, App Service P1v3+, AKS)
- Backup configuration: Enable soft delete (Key Vault 90 days, Storage)
- Disaster recovery: Configure geo-redundancy for critical data (GRS, GZRS)
- Diagnostic settings: Send logs to Log Analytics workspace
- Health probes: Configure for load balancers and application gateways

**Performance Efficiency:**

- Use appropriate SKUs for environment:
  - Dev: Basic/Standard (B1, S1)
  - Staging: Standard (S2, S3)
  - Production: Premium (P1v3+, P2, P3)
- Enable autoscaling where supported
- Use CDN for static content delivery
- Configure caching strategies

**Cost Optimization:**

- Use auto-shutdown for dev/test VMs
- Right-size resources based on actual usage
- Enable Azure Hybrid Benefit where applicable (document in comments)
- Use reserved instances for predictable workloads (document savings opportunity)
- Implement resource tagging for cost allocation

**Operational Excellence:**

- Diagnostic settings on all resources
- Output resource IDs AND resource names for downstream automation
- Generate deployment scripts with proper error handling
- Include rollback procedures in comments
- Document operational procedures

**Diagnostic Settings Pattern (CRITICAL):**
When creating diagnostic settings modules, pass resource **names** (not IDs) and use the `existing` keyword:

**Why**: The `scope` property requires a resource symbolic reference, not a string.
Resource IDs are strings and cause BCP036 errors.

### Azure Verified Modules (AVM) MANDATORY

**ALWAYS use AVM modules when available:**

**AVM Resource Discovery:**

1. Check AVM registry: https://aka.ms/avm
2. Search GitHub: https://github.com/Azure/bicep-registry-modules/tree/main/avm/res
3. Use latest version from module changelog
4. **Document if AVM not used** with rationale in comments

**Generate deployment scripts**: Create deploy.ps1 for each main template with proper parameter handling
**What-if before deploy**: Always run what-if analysis and summarize changes before actual deployment

### Deployment Script Requirements

Every Bicep implementation MUST include a `deploy.ps1` script with:

1. **Professional formatting**: ASCII banner, boxed sections, colored output
2. **CmdletBinding(SupportsShouldProcess)**: For automatic `-WhatIf` support
3. **Auto-detect SQL admin**: Use current Azure user if `SqlAdminGroupObjectId` not provided
4. **Pre-flight validation**: Check Azure CLI, Bicep CLI, authentication
5. **Template validation**: Run `bicep build` and `bicep lint` before deployment
6. **Change summary**: Parse what-if output to show create/modify/delete counts
7. **User confirmation**: Require explicit "yes" before deployment

## Naming Conventions & Uniqueness

**CRITICAL: All Azure resources MUST use unique names with random suffix**

### Generate Unique Suffix

In main.bicep, generate a unique suffix from resource group ID:

### Resource Naming Pattern

All resources must follow this pattern: `{prefix}-{project}-{env}-{uniqueSuffix}`

**Examples:**

- Key Vault: `kv-project-dev-a1b2c3` (max 24 chars)
- Storage Account: `stprojectdeva1b2c3` (no hyphens, max 24 chars, lowercase only)
- SQL Server: `sql-project-dev-a1b2c3` (max 63 chars)
- App Service: `app-project-dev-a1b2c3` (max 60 chars)
- Virtual Network: `vnet-project-dev-a1b2c3` (max 64 chars)
- Log Analytics: `log-project-dev-a1b2c3` (max 63 chars)

### Length Constraints (Critical)

**Always enforce Azure naming limits:**

- Storage Account: 3-24 characters, lowercase letters and numbers only, globally unique
- Key Vault: 3-24 characters, alphanumeric and hyphens, globally unique
- SQL Server: 1-63 characters, lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens (no hyphen at start/end)
- App Service: 2-60 characters

### Pass Suffix to Modules

**Always pass uniqueSuffix parameter to ALL modules:**

### Module Parameter Requirements

**Every module MUST accept uniqueSuffix parameter:**

### Module Output Requirements

**Every module MUST output both resource ID AND resource name:**

**Why**: Resource names are required for `existing` keyword references in downstream modules
(e.g., diagnostic settings). Resource IDs alone cause BCP036 errors when used as `scope`.

### Why This Matters

- **Prevents deployment failures**: Azure rejects duplicate names for globally unique resources
- **Enables parallel deployments**: Multiple environments can coexist
- **Supports testing**: Developers can deploy without naming conflicts
- **Azure requirements**: Storage, Key Vault, SQL Server, CosmosDB, etc. require globally unique names

### Validation Checklist

Before completing implementation, verify:

- [ ] main.bicep generates `uniqueSuffix` from `resourceGroup().id`
- [ ] All modules accept `uniqueSuffix` parameter
- [ ] All resource names include the suffix
- [ ] Storage account names use lowercase, no hyphens, include suffix
- [ ] Key Vault names are ≤24 characters including suffix
- [ ] SQL Server names are lowercase with suffix
- [ ] No hardcoded resource names anywhere
