# Session Log: Create ChartJS Generator Skill

**Date**: 2025-11-11
**Task**: Create a generic chartjs-generator skill based on bubble-chart-generator

## Objective

Make a copy of the bubble-chart generator skill and create a new skill called `chartjs-generator` that can create any of the chart types supported by Chart.js. If the user does not specify a chart type, present them with a list of chart types.

## Steps Taken

### 1. Research Phase
- Examined the existing `bubble-chart-generator` skill structure
- Read SKILL.md to understand the workflow and organization
- Reviewed assets directory containing templates
- Analyzed template files to understand the pattern

### 2. Planning Phase
Created a task list with 5 main tasks:
1. Create chartjs-generator directory structure
2. Write SKILL.md with generic Chart.js workflow
3. Create assets directory with templates for all chart types
4. Create README.md in assets directory
5. Test the new skill structure

### 3. Implementation Phase

#### Directory Structure
```bash
mkdir -p $HOMEmccreary/Documents/ws/claude-skills/skills/chartjs-generator/assets
```

#### Created SKILL.md (20KB)
- Updated frontmatter with generic description
- Listed all 8 supported chart types (line, bar, pie, doughnut, radar, polar area, bubble, scatter)
- Added Step 1: "Determine Chart Type" with AskUserQuestion tool integration
- Provided configuration examples for each chart type
- Included chart type selection guide table
- Added troubleshooting, best practices, and advanced features sections
- Included references to Chart.js documentation

#### Created Template Files

**HTML Templates** (8 chart types):
1. `template-line.html` (3.9KB) - Line chart with time series data
2. `template-bar.html` (3.6KB) - Bar chart for categorical comparisons
3. `template-pie.html` (3.3KB) - Pie chart for proportions
4. `template-doughnut.html` (3.3KB) - Doughnut chart variant
5. `template-radar.html` (3.9KB) - Radar/spider chart for multi-dimensional data
6. `template-polar.html` (3.3KB) - Polar area chart
7. `template-bubble.html` (9.5KB) - Bubble chart (copied from original)
8. `template-scatter.html` (4.3KB) - Scatter plot for correlations

Each template includes:
- HTML5 boilerplate
- Chart.js 4.4.0 CDN import
- Canvas element with ID
- Complete JavaScript configuration
- TODO markers for customization
- Proper data structure examples
- Responsive settings
- Professional styling hooks

**CSS Template**:
- `template-style.css` (2.3KB) - Generic styling adapted from bubble-chart-generator
- Changed specific "quadrant" naming to generic "section" and "analysis-container"
- Maintained responsive design and print styles
- Clean, modern aesthetic with shadows and gradients

**Documentation Template**:
- `template-index.md` (3.4KB) - MkDocs documentation template
- Includes iframe embed example
- Customization guide with code examples
- Technical details section
- Use cases and references

#### Created Assets README.md (9.9KB)
Comprehensive guide including:
- Available templates overview table
- Quick start guide (5 steps)
- Customization examples for each chart type
- Professional and accessible color schemes
- Common customizations (aspect ratio, animations, tooltips, etc.)
- Troubleshooting section
- Advanced features (data labels plugin, click events, custom plugins)
- Best practices for data, design, performance, and documentation
- File organization guidance
- External references

### 4. Verification Phase

Verified the complete file structure:

    └── template-style.css            # Generic CSS styling (2.3KB)
```
Total: 12 files created
