# Topic Researcher Skill

## When to activate
User runs `/research-topic [topic]` or before drafting any newsletter to gather current data, trends, and expert insights.

## When NOT to use
This skill should not replace primary research when the user explicitly requests original analysis or investigation beyond publicly available sources.

## Instructions

1. **Search for current trends and data** on the given topic
   - Use WebSearch for news, recent publications, and trending insights
   - Look for data within the last 30–90 days
   - Identify 2–3 key data points or statistics

2. **Gather expert perspectives**
   - Find quotes, interviews, or commentary from recognized experts
   - Note their credentials and affiliation
   - Use WebFetch to extract full expert quotes when needed

3. **Identify competitive or alternative angles**
   - What are other perspectives or approaches?
   - What's the contrarian take?
   - Are there counterarguments or nuances?

4. **Compile research brief**
   - Topic summary (2–3 sentences)
   - 2–3 key trends or data points with sources
   - 1–2 expert quotes with attribution
   - Competitive/alternative angles
   - Suggested hook/angle for newsletter

5. **Surface to session log**
   - Log: topic researched, key data points, expert sources, angle selected
   - Flag any gaps or areas needing follow-up
