# Tracking deadlines and limitation

A missed limitation date is the profession's most expensive mistake and it is
always avoidable.

## For every date, record

What it is · the rule or order that creates it · the trigger event and its date ·
how the period is computed, including whether the trigger day counts · the
resulting date · whether it can be extended, and by whom.

**Show the computation.** A date without its working cannot be checked, and
these get checked.

## Escalate early

Escalate at a comfortable margin before the date, not the day before. Limitation
escalates furthest out, because the response may be to issue protectively and
that takes time.

## Recompute on new facts

A changed date of knowledge, a new defendant, a different cause of action — each
can move limitation. Recompute rather than carrying the original forward.

## Flag

Dates computed from an assumed trigger, matters with no limitation date
recorded, and any date falling in a court vacation or a holiday period.

## Never

Rely on a single reminder, or record a limitation date without the reasoning.
