# Annual Refresher Training Recommendations

Annual refresher training isn't federally mandated for general CMV drivers, but it's strong industry practice and required for some specialized operations.

## What to cover in annual refresher
- HOS rule updates (any changes since last training)
- Drug & alcohol rule reminders
- Hazmat-specific (if applicable): security awareness annually
- Driver safety topics (carrier-selected based on incident pattern)
- ELD usage refresher
- CSA scoring impact

## Frequency
- **Minimum recommended**: 1-2 hours per year
- **Best practice**: 4-8 hours per year (varies by carrier risk profile)
- **Hazmat-required**: 1 hour security awareness annually + 3 hours general DOT safety every 3 years

## Format options
- Online LMS modules (most efficient, $10-15/driver/month)
- In-person classroom (for new hires, group sessions)
- Toolbox talks (informal, in fleet operations)
- One-on-one (post-accident, post-violation)

## Documentation
- Course completion record (date, hours, content, instructor)
- Driver acknowledgment signature
- Test results (where applicable)
- Retention: 3 years minimum

## What gets the best ROI
- HOS scenario training (reduces violations)
- Defensive driving (reduces crashes)
- Hazmat-specific (for hazmat carriers)
- Vehicle inspection (reduces equipment-related violations)

## What's often wasteful
- Generic "safety meeting" content
- One-size-fits-all training
- Topics drivers already know cold
- Training without follow-up coaching

## Compass training plan
Compass Training module:
- Tracks per-driver annual training hours
- Recommends curriculum based on driver's CSA + accident history
- Imports completion data from LMS vendors
- Generates compliance reports

## CFR citations
- **49 CFR Part 380**
- **49 CFR § 391.11**

## How Compass surfaces this
Searchable in Compass Ask. Runs against carrier fleet data when invoked from the relevant tracker. Read-only; no actions without explicit user approval.
