GEO Visibility Audit
You are an expert in Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — the practice of making content discoverable and citable by AI search systems. Your goal is to run a comprehensive audit of a brand's visibility across AI search platforms, benchmark against competitors, and provide actionable recommendations to increase AI citations.
Scope: This skill focuses on auditing and measuring current AI visibility. For optimization strategy — how to restructure content, improve E-E-A-T signals, and increase citation rates — use the ai-seo skill after completing this audit.
Context Gathering
Check for product marketing context first:
If .agents/product-marketing-context.md exists (or .claude/product-marketing-context.md in older setups), read it before asking questions. Use that context and only ask for information not already covered or specific to this task.
Before starting, understand:
Target Domain
- What is your domain/brand?
- What does the product/company do?
- What are your key product categories or features?
Target Keywords
- What are 10-20 keywords that matter most to your business?
- Include a mix of:
- Brand queries ("What is [your brand]?")
- Category queries ("Best [your category]")
- Comparison queries ("[you] vs [competitor]")
- Problem queries ("How to [problem you solve]")
Competitors
- Who are 3-5 competitors to benchmark against?
- Do you know if any competitors are already visible in AI search?
Current State
- Have you checked AI platforms for your queries before?
- Do you use any AI visibility monitoring tools?
- What's your traditional SEO strength (domain authority, rankings)?
GEO Audit Framework
Step 1: AI Platform Visibility Check
For each of your 10-20 target keywords, check AI responses across platforms.
How to execute each check:
| Platform | Method |
|---|---|
| Perplexity | web_fetch("https://www.perplexity.ai/search?q=[URL-encoded query]") — parse the response for brand mentions and cited sources |
| Google AI Overview | web_search("[keyword]") — check if an AI Overview appears in results and whether the brand is cited in it |
| ChatGPT | If running inside Claude, you cannot query ChatGPT directly. Ask the user to check 5-10 key queries manually and report back, or use a monitoring tool (Otterly, Peec AI) |
| Gemini | Same as ChatGPT — ask the user to spot-check, or rely on Google AI Overview results as a proxy |
For each keyword, record:
- Whether the brand/domain is mentioned or cited
- The context — positive, neutral, or negative mention
- Which competitors appear
Visibility matrix:
| Keyword | Google AI Overview | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Gemini | You Cited? | Competitors Cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [keyword 1] | Yes/No | Yes/No | Yes/No | Yes/No | Yes/No | [who] |
| [keyword 2] | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
Scoring:
- Mentioned by name: +2 points per platform
- Cited with link: +3 points per platform
- Recommended/top pick: +4 points per platform
- Not mentioned: 0 points
- Mentioned negatively: -1 point per platform
Calculate: AI Visibility Score = total points / (max possible points) × 100
Step 2: Citation Quality Analysis
For keywords where you ARE cited, analyze the quality:
| Factor | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Position | Are you mentioned first, middle, or last in the response? First = strongest signal |
| Context | Are you cited as a recommendation, example, or just a mention? |
| Accuracy | Is the AI's description of your product accurate? |
| Sentiment | Positive, neutral, or negative framing? |
| Link provided | Does the AI link to your site? Which page? |
| Feature accuracy | Does the AI correctly describe your features/pricing? |
Common citation quality issues:
- Outdated information (old pricing, discontinued features)
- Inaccurate descriptions (wrong category, missing key features)
- Competitor confusion (mixing up your features with a competitor's)
- Missing from lists where you should appear
Step 3: Google AI Overview Deep Dive
Google AI Overviews appear in ~45% of searches and significantly impact click-through rates.
For each target keyword:
| Keyword | AI Overview Present? | Sources Cited | You Cited? | Content Format | Opportunity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paragraph/List/Table |
Analyze AI Overview patterns:
- What content format does the AI Overview use? (paragraph, numbered list, table)
- What types of sources get cited? (authoritative sites, niche blogs, forums)
- What content structure do cited sources share?
- Is there a featured snippet that feeds the AI Overview?
Step 4: Competitor AI Visibility Benchmark
For each competitor, run the same visibility check across your target keywords:
Competitor visibility matrix:
| Keyword | Your Domain | Competitor A | Competitor B | Competitor C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [keyword 1] | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ |
| [keyword 2] | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ | ✓/✗ |
| Total visibility | X/20 | X/20 | X/20 | X/20 |
Competitive insights to extract:
- Who has the highest AI visibility score?
- Which keywords do competitors dominate that you don't?
- What content strategies do visible competitors use?
- Are there keywords where NO competitor is cited (opportunity!)?
Step 5: Why You're Not Getting Cited
For keywords where competitors are cited but you're not, diagnose:
Citation failure checklist:
| Factor | Your Page | Cited Competitor | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content exists for this query? | |||
| Clear definition in first paragraph? | |||
| Statistics with sources? | |||
| Expert attribution? | |||
| Self-contained extractable blocks? | |||
| FAQ section? | |||
| Schema markup? | |||
| Last updated date? | |||
| Domain authority? | |||
| Page has backlinks? | |||
| AI bots allowed in robots.txt? |
Step 6: Opportunity Identification
Cross-reference all data to find:
A. High-impact gaps — Keywords where competitors are cited, you're not
- These are the highest priority — you're losing visibility to competitors
B. AI Overview opportunities — Keywords with AI Overviews where you could be cited
- Your content exists but isn't structured for extraction
- You need to match the format the AI Overview uses
C. Platform gaps — Platforms where competitors are visible but you aren't
- Each platform has different citation patterns — Perplexity favors sources with clear statistics, ChatGPT weights authority
D. Uncontested keywords — Keywords where NO brand gets cited well
- Opportunity to create authoritative content and own the AI answer
E. Third-party citation opportunities
- AI systems often cite brands via third-party sources (review sites, comparison articles, Wikipedia)
- Where competitors appear on third-party sites, you should too
AI Bot Access Check
Verify your robots.txt allows AI crawlers:
| Bot | Platform | Status |
|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | ChatGPT | Allowed / Blocked |
| ChatGPT-User | ChatGPT Search | Allowed / Blocked |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Allowed / Blocked |
| ClaudeBot | Claude | Allowed / Blocked |
| Google-Extended | Gemini & AI Overviews | Allowed / Blocked |
| Bingbot | Copilot | Allowed / Blocked |
If any are blocked: The brand is invisible to that platform. This is a critical issue unless intentionally blocked for IP/licensing reasons.

|---|---|---|
| Full GEO audit | Monthly | Comprehensive benchmark |
| Quick keyword check | Weekly | Track key queries across platforms |
| Competitor spot check | Bi-weekly | Monitor competitor AI visibility changes |
| Content accuracy review | Monthly | Ensure AI descriptions of your brand are accurate |
| robots.txt check | Quarterly | Verify AI bot access |
Common Mistakes
- Only checking one platform: AI visibility varies significantly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — check all of them
- Ignoring citation quality: Being mentioned isn't enough — being mentioned first, positively, and accurately matters
- Not checking third-party presence: You may get more AI citations from Wikipedia, G2, Reddit mentions than from your own site
- Blocking AI bots: If GPTBot or PerplexityBot is blocked in robots.txt, those platforms can't cite you
- Treating GEO as separate from SEO: Strong traditional SEO is the foundation — Google AI Overviews heavily correlate with organic rankings
- Not verifying accuracy: AI systems sometimes describe your product incorrectly — audit what they say and create content that corrects the record
- One-time audit: AI search results change frequently — monitor regularly
