Lopa Lookahead

Overview

LoPA addresses a critical bottleneck in diffusion language model (dLLM) inference: limited parallelism due to dependence on Token Filling Order (TFO). Which positions are filled first dramatically affects future prediction confidence and parallelism opportunities. This framework discovers optimal TFOs dynamically.

Core Technique

The key insight is that token filling order significantly impacts future parallelism potential.

Multi-Branch Lookahead Exploration: Instead of committing to a single filling order, explore multiple candidates concurrently.

Branch Confidence Metric: Evaluate each branch by its average prediction confidence over remaining positions.

Use LoPA when:

When NOT to Use This Technique

Avoid this approach if:

• Autoregressive models (position-dependent, can't reorder)
• Sequential constraints exist (fixed decoding order)
• Lookahead exploration adds unacceptable latency
• Memory constraints prohibit batch evaluation
