Common Accessibility Patterns

Modal Dialog

function Modal({ isOpen, onClose, title, children }) {
  const modalRef = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null)

  useEffect(() => {
    if (isOpen) {
      // Focus trap
      const focusableElements = modalRef.current?.querySelectorAll(
        'button, [href], input, select, textarea, [tabindex]:not([tabindex="-1"])'
      )
      const firstElement = focusableElements?.[0] as HTMLElement
      firstElement?.focus()

      // Prevent background scroll
      document.body.style.overflow = 'hidden'

      return () => {
        document.body.style.overflow = ''
      }
    }
  }, [isOpen])

  if (!isOpen) return null

  return (
    <div
      className="modal-overlay"

      role="dialog"
      aria-modal="true"
      aria-labelledby="modal-title"
      ref={modalRef}
    >
      <div className="modal-content" => e.stopPropagation()}>
        <h2 id="modal-title">{title}</h2>
        {children}
        <button aria-label="Close dialog">
          ×
        </button>
      </div>
    </div>
  )
}

Accordion

function Accordion({ items }) {
  const [openIndex, setOpenIndex] = useState<number | null>(null)

  return (
    <div className="accordion">
      {items.map((item, index) => (
        <div key={index} className="accordion-item">
          <h3>
            <button
              id={`accordion-button-${index}`}
              aria-expanded={openIndex === index}
              aria-controls={`accordion-panel-${index}`}
              => setOpenIndex(openIndex === index ? null : index)}
            >
              {item.title}
            </button>
          </h3>
          <div
            id={`accordion-panel-${index}`}
            role="region"
            aria-labelledby={`accordion-button-${index}`}
            hidden={openIndex !== index}
          >
            {item.content}
          </div>
        </div>
      ))}
    </div>
  )
}

Data Table

<table>
  <caption>User Statistics for Q1 2025</caption>
  <thead>
    <tr>
      <th scope="col">Month</th>
      <th scope="col">New Users</th>
      <th scope="col">Active Users</th>
    </tr>
  </thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <th scope="row">January</th>
      <td>1,234</td>
      <td>5,678</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

Live Region (Toast Notifications)

function Toast({ message, type }) {
  return (
    <div
      role="status"
      aria-live="polite"
      aria-atomic="true"
      className={`toast toast-${type}`}
    >
      {message}
    </div>
  )
}

// For urgent alerts
<div role="alert" aria-live="assertive">
  Critical error occurred!
</div>

Accessibility Testing

Automated Testing

# Install axe-core
npm install --save-dev @axe-core/react

# In development
if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production') {
  import('@axe-core/react').then(axe => {
    axe.default(React, ReactDOM, 1000)
  })
}
