Story Analysis

Story Analysis Skill

1. ACTIVE BASELINE CONFIGURATION

• STRUCTURE_ADHERENCE: 6 (1=Freeform/Experimental, 10=Rigid Beat-Sheet)
• CHARACTER_DEPTH: 8 (1=Archetypal/Functional, 10=Literary/Contradictory)
• THEME_EXPLICITNESS: 4 (1=Buried/Implicit, 10=Stated/Didactic)

AI Instruction: These values (6, 8, 4) are the standard baseline. Adapt dynamically based on user input. A thriller needs higher STRUCTURE_ADHERENCE. A literary novel needs higher CHARACTER_DEPTH. A children's story needs higher THEME_EXPLICITNESS. Never ask the user to edit this file.

2. THE STORY CIRCLE

Dan Harmon's Story Circle is the backbone of this skill. Every narrative — macro (whole story) and micro (each chapter, each scene) — maps onto these eight steps. The circle is not a formula. It's a diagnostic. When something feels wrong, the circle tells you which step is broken.

The Eight Steps

1. YOU — A character exists in a zone of comfort or familiarity.
2. NEED — They want something. The want creates motion.
3. GO — They enter an unfamiliar situation. The threshold crossing.
4. SEARCH — They adapt, struggle, learn the rules of the new world.
5. FIND — They get what they wanted. Or think they do.
6. TAKE — They pay a heavy price for it.
7. RETURN — They go back to where they started.
8. CHANGE — They are fundamentally different. The world is different.

The Vertical Axis: Order and Chaos

The circle splits into two halves. Steps 1-4 are the descent — moving from the known into the unknown, from order into chaos. Steps 5-8 are the ascent — returning from chaos to order, but changed. The midpoint (between 4 and 5) is the deepest point of chaos. The character is farthest from home.

The Horizontal Axis: Conscious and Unconscious

Steps 1, 2, 7, 8 are the "above" world — the character's conscious life, what they think they want. Steps 3, 4, 5, 6 are the "below" world — the unconscious, what they actually need. Great stories create tension between these. The character wants power but needs connection. They want safety but need courage.

Using the Circle

For outlining: Map your protagonist through all eight steps at the macro level. Then map each act. Then each chapter. Nested circles. The fractal is the structure.

For diagnosing problems:

• Story feels aimless? → Step 2 is weak. The NEED isn't clear or compelling.
• Middle sags? → Steps 3-4 lack escalation. The SEARCH should get harder, not repetitive.
• Ending feels hollow? → Step 8 doesn't deliver real CHANGE. The character returned to step 1 without transformation.
• Climax doesn't land? → Step 6 (the PRICE) is too cheap. If they don't lose something real, the victory means nothing.
• Story feels predictable? → The FIND in step 5 is what the audience expected. Make it a monkey's paw — they get what they wanted, but wrong.

For revision: Ask these questions at every level (scene, chapter, act, whole story):

• Who wants what? (Step 2)
• What's stopping them? (Steps 3-4)
• What do they sacrifice? (Step 6)
• How are they different at the end? (Step 8)

If you can't answer any of these, that's where the story is broken.

3. CHARACTER ARC ANALYSIS

The Three Arc Types

Positive Change Arc: Character starts with a false belief (the "lie"). Through the story, they confront the truth and adopt it. The world confirms the truth. Most protagonists.

• Diagnostic: What is the lie? What is the truth? When does the character first encounter the truth? When do they reject it? When do they finally accept it?

Negative Change Arc: Character starts with truth (or a lie) and descends into a deeper lie. The world breaks them or they break themselves. Tragedies, villain origin stories.

• Diagnostic: What breaks them? Is the descent gradual or sudden? Does the audience see it coming before the character does?

Flat Arc: Character already knows the truth. They don't change — they change the world around them. The world starts broken and the character fixes it. James Bond, Atticus Finch.

• Diagnostic: What truth does the character hold? How does the world resist it? Does the world actually change by the end, or is this just wish fulfillment?

Character Want vs. Need

Every character worth analyzing has a want (conscious, stated, what drives their actions) and a need (unconscious, unstated, what they actually require for fulfillment). The gap between want and need is where story lives.

• Want without need = shallow action plot
• Need without want = navel-gazing literary fiction
• Want that contradicts need = compelling drama

Diagnostic questions:

• Can you state the want in one sentence?
• Can you state the need in one sentence?
• Do they conflict?
• At what point does the character realize their want isn't their need?
• Do they choose the need over the want? (Positive arc.) Or the want over the need? (Negative arc.)

The Wound

Every character with depth carries a wound — the formative experience that created their false belief, their defense mechanism, their way of moving through the world. The wound is not backstory decoration. It's the engine of behavior.

Diagnostic:

• What happened to this character before the story started?
• How does that event distort their perception?
• What behavior pattern does the wound create?
• Does the story force them to confront the wound directly?
• A wound that never gets poked is just lore. It has to hurt during the story.

4. PLANT AND PAYOFF TRACKING

The Rules

A plant is information introduced early that becomes significant later. A payoff is when the planted information delivers its purpose.

Rule 1: Every plant must pay off. If you show a gun on the wall in act one, it fires in act three. If it doesn't fire, the audience remembers the gun and feels cheated.

Rule 2: Every payoff must be planted. If a character reveals a hidden skill in the climax, the reader needs to have seen a hint of it earlier. Unplanted payoffs feel like cheating — deus ex machina.

Rule 3: The gap between plant and payoff creates tension. Too close (same scene) = no tension. Too far (100 pages apart) = the reader forgets. The sweet spot depends on the plant's significance — small plants pay off within a chapter, major plants span the whole story.

Rule 4: The best plants don't look like plants. They look like character detail, world-building, or throwaway moments. The reader doesn't realize they were important until the payoff recontextualizes them.

Rule 5: Double-duty plants. The strongest plants serve a purpose in the scene where they appear AND pay off later. The beef jerky memory works as character texture when introduced AND as emotional devastation when recalled.

Plant/Payoff Ledger

When analyzing a manuscript, maintain a ledger:

Diagnostic:

• List every detail that seems deliberately placed.
• Track forward: does it pay off?
• Track backward from every climactic moment: was it planted?
• Flag orphaned plants (introduced but never used) and unearned payoffs (used but never introduced).

5. TONAL DIAGNOSTICS

Tone Map

Every story has a tonal arc. It's not random — tone shifts should be deliberate and escalating. Map the intended tone of each act/section:

Tonal Registers:

• Comic — Satire, absurdity, wit, irony
• Adventurous — Wonder, excitement, discovery
• Tense — Suspense, dread, uncertainty
• Tragic — Grief, loss, inevitability
• Intimate — Vulnerability, connection, interiority
• Horrific — Revulsion, existential dread, the uncanny
• Triumphant — Earned victory, catharsis, resolution

Most stories operate in 2-3 registers and modulate between them. The transitions are where tone breaks happen.

Diagnostic questions:

• What is the dominant tone of each act?
• Where do tonal shifts occur? Are they earned or jarring?
• Does the tone escalate? (Comedy → dark comedy → tragedy is escalation. Random oscillation is not.)
• Is there a tonal "home base" the story returns to?
• Does the ending's tone match the story's promise? (A comedy that ends in despair without earning it. A thriller that resolves too neatly.)

The Tonal Contract

The first chapter makes a promise to the reader about what kind of story this is. Breaking that promise can work — but only if the break is the point. If chapter 1 is satirical comedy and chapter 10 is grimdark trauma with no bridge between them, the reader feels betrayed.

Diagnostic: Read the first chapter. What does it promise? Read the last chapter. Does it deliver on that promise, subvert it intentionally, or just forget it?

6. SCENE-LEVEL ANALYSIS

Every Scene Must Do Two Things

At minimum, every scene must:

1. Advance plot OR reveal character (preferably both)
2. Change the value state — something must be different at the end of the scene than at the beginning

If a scene does neither, it's dead weight. Cut it or combine it.

Scene Diagnostics

For each scene, identify:

• POV: Whose scene is this? Who has the most at stake?
• Goal: What does the POV character want in this scene?
• Obstacle: What prevents them from getting it?
• Outcome: Do they get it? (Yes, but... / No, and... are stronger than clean Yes/No)
• Turn: What changes? What's different when the scene ends?
• Story Circle Step: Which of the 8 steps does this scene serve?

Pacing Diagnostics

• Scene length variation: Like paragraph length in prose — uniform scene lengths create monotony. A 10-page scene followed by a 2-page scene creates rhythm.
• Tension curves: Each scene should have its own micro tension arc. Build, peak, release. Scenes that maintain flat tension are boring. Scenes that start at peak tension have nowhere to go.
• Sequel scenes: After a high-action scene, the reader needs a "sequel" — a quieter scene where the character processes what happened. Action without processing creates numbness. But the sequel must still change something — reflection without movement is stalling.

7. THEME ANALYSIS

Finding Theme

Theme is not a message. Theme is a question the story asks and answers through action. "Power corrupts" is a message. "What happens when good people gain power they didn't ask for?" is a theme.

Diagnostic:

• State the theme as a question, not a statement.
• Does every major character embody a different answer to that question?
• Does the plot force the theme to be tested? (A story "about" freedom where no character's freedom is ever threatened is a story about nothing.)
• Is the theme present in the A-plot AND the B-plot? (Parallel thematic exploration across plotlines is what separates good from great.)

Thematic Coherence

Every subplot, every character arc, every symbolic detail should refract the same central theme from a different angle. If a subplot doesn't connect to the theme, it's either the wrong subplot or the theme needs broadening.

The Mirror Test: Take any two characters. Do they represent contrasting approaches to the same thematic question? If they do, their scenes together will crackle. If they don't, they're occupying space that could go to characters who do.

8. AI TELLS (Forbidden Patterns in Narrative Analysis)

Structure

• NO cookie-cutter beat sheets: Don't force every story into Save the Cat or 3-act structure if it doesn't fit. Use the Story Circle as a lens, not a mold. Some stories are circular. Some are linear. Identify what the story IS before prescribing what it should be.
• NO "the protagonist should be more likeable": Compelling beats likeable. Walter White is not likeable. Diagnose whether the character is interesting, not whether they're nice.
• NO false symmetry: Not every story needs a B-plot that mirrors the A-plot. Not every character needs a foil. Identify what's actually there before suggesting what should be.

Character

• NO psychoanalyzing characters like patients: Characters are not real people with DSM diagnoses. They're constructs serving a narrative. Analyze them in terms of function (what do they do for the story?) and effect (what do they make the reader feel?), not pathology.
• NO "show don't tell" as blanket advice: Sometimes telling is right. An omniscient narrator summarizing a decade is not a flaw. Identify specifically where showing would be stronger and why.

Theme

• NO reducing theme to a moral: "The theme is that friendship is important" is not analysis. That's a greeting card. State the theme as a tension, a question, a contradiction.
• NO imposing themes the text doesn't support: Find the themes that are actually present in the work, not the themes you think should be there.

Tone

• NO "the tone is inconsistent" without specifics: Point to the exact sentence where the tone breaks. Explain what register it was in and what register it jumped to. Generic tonal critique is useless.

9. THE ANALYSIS PROTOCOL

When asked to analyze a story, follow this sequence:

Phase 1: Read and Map

• Read the complete text
• Map the protagonist through the Story Circle (macro level)
• Identify want, need, wound, and lie for each major character
• Note every potential plant

Phase 2: Diagnose

• Which Story Circle steps are strong? Which are weak or missing?
• Track the plant/payoff ledger — flag orphans and unearned payoffs
• Map the tonal arc — where does it shift? Are shifts earned?
• Run scene diagnostics on any scene that felt off during reading

Phase 3: Report

Structure the analysis as:

1. What's working — Name the strengths first. Be specific. Quote lines.
2. Story Circle diagnosis — Where in the circle is the story weakest?
3. Character arc status — Want/need/wound for each major character. Are arcs completing?
4. Plant/payoff ledger — Open plants, missing payoffs, unearned moments
5. Tonal map — The arc of tone across the piece, with any breaks flagged
6. Specific recommendations — Actionable, prioritized, tied to diagnosis

Phase 4: Prioritize

Not every issue matters equally. Rank by impact:

1. Structural — Missing or broken Story Circle steps (story doesn't work)
2. Character — Unclear want/need, unmotivated decisions (characters don't work)
3. Tonal — Unearned shifts, broken promises (experience doesn't work)
4. Plant/Payoff — Orphans and cheats (details don't work)
5. Scene-level — Pacing, dead scenes, missing turns (moments don't work)

Fix structural problems before scene-level polish. A perfectly written scene in the wrong place is still in the wrong place.

10. FINAL PRE-FLIGHT CHECK

Before delivering any narrative analysis:

• Have I mapped the Story Circle for the protagonist?
• Have I identified want, need, and wound for major characters?
• Have I tracked plants and payoffs?
• Have I mapped the tonal arc?
• Am I diagnosing what's actually in the text, not what I wish were there?
• Are my recommendations specific and actionable, not generic advice?
• Have I led with what's working before what's broken?
• Have I quoted specific lines/moments to anchor my analysis?
