Deriving Social Systems

Given a species' biology, cognition, and environment, derive what coordination structures necessarily emerge. Do not start from a checklist of expected institutions. Start from constraints.

The same method applies to all species. Human biology in a novel environment will produce novel social structures — potentially structures that have never existed in Earth's historical record. The derivation chain doesn't care whether the result looks familiar. It cares whether the result follows from the constraints.

Prerequisites

1. Biology files for this species MUST exist and be author-approved
2. Cognition files for this species MUST exist and be author-approved
3. Planet/environment files MUST exist
4. Read all of the above before beginning derivation

If any prerequisite is missing, STOP. You cannot derive social systems without knowing what the species' biology, cognition, and environment actually are.

The Derivation Method

Phase 1: Constraint Inventory

Build a constraint profile from the biology, cognition, and environment files. Answer every question. If the answer isn't in the existing files, flag it as a gap — do not assume.

Communication constraints:

• What is the physical medium? (Sound? Light? Chemical? Electromagnetic? Contact? Field emission? Substrate vibration? For humans: vocal, but shaped by environment — dense atmosphere, wind, underground living, aquatic proximity all reshape what's practical)
• What bandwidth does it have? (How much information per exchange?)
• What range does it have? (Adjacent only? Line of sight? Planetary?)
• Is deception possible? (Can an individual send a signal that doesn't match their internal state?)
• Is communication one-to-one, one-to-many, or ambient?

Medium-dependent communication physics:

The communication medium determines more social structure than any other single constraint. Identify which category the environment produces:

1. Full-fidelity solid substrate — dense crystalline mineral with coherent propagation. Signal arrives as sent. Settlement and governance can be continuous.

2. Phonon-dead loose substrate — sand, loose soil, fragmented particles. Signal attenuates within body-lengths. Produces communication islands and cross-silence transit challenges. Settlement clusters at conductive outcroppings.

3. Carrier-preserving but content-stripping solid — ice, certain polymers. Mechanical carrier propagates but encoding dimension is lost. Produces hub-and-spoke topology with decoder relay stations.

4. Carrier-preserving but content-stripping liquid — water, dilute solution. Signal range varies with gap width. Produces island-polity independence or temporal-encoding relay solutions.

5. Carrier-preserving with signal transformation — mineral-rich brine, chemically active solution. Content partially survives but is transformed by the medium's chemistry. The message arrives different from how it was sent. Produces cultures where the transformation itself becomes a philosophical element.

6. Cascade-amplifying substrate — fractal-fracture crystal with nested feedback. Signal enters and returns complexified by the substrate's geometry. Information is added by the medium. Produces civilizations whose perception includes the substrate's own contribution to every signal.

Each medium type produces a different governance topology, knowledge transmission architecture, and philosophical relationship to communication itself. Identify the medium type FIRST, then derive the social structures that the medium produces.

Cognitive constraints:

• Is cognition individual, paired, collective, or distributed?
• Can the species model other minds? (Theory of mind level)
• Can the species engage in strategic deception?
• What is working memory capacity and structure?
• How does the species represent time? (Linear? Cyclical? Layered?)
• What abstraction capabilities exist?

Biological constraints:

• What does the species need to survive? (Energy, materials, conditions)
• What is the reproduction strategy and what social structures does reproduction require, if any?
• What is the lifespan and development trajectory?
• What is the species' relationship to its environment? (Sessile? Mobile? Migratory? Habitat-constructing?)
• What threats exist? (Predation? Environmental? Intraspecies?)
• What is the group size that the biology supports?

Resource constraints:

• What is actually scarce for this species on this planet?
• What is abundant?
• Are scarce resources divisible or indivisible?
• Can scarce resources be stored, hoarded, or transferred?
• Does access to resources require cooperation?
• Is the scarce resource material, social, cognitive, or environmental?

Environmental constraints:

• What does the geography enable and prevent? (Travel, congregation, isolation, territorial boundaries)
• What does the climate demand? (Shelter, migration, seasonal behavior)
• What energy sources are available and how are they accessed?
• What natural hazards shape behavior and settlement?

Terrain constraints:

The physical shape of the landscape determines what settlement patterns are possible before any social choice is made.

• Is the terrain vertical (mountains, spires, cave systems, canyon walls) or horizontal (plains, salt flats, ocean surface)?
• Is the terrain continuous (unbroken substrate across the habitable zone) or fragmented (islands, capsules, oases, cave systems separated by impassable gaps)?
• Is the terrain stable (geological timescale persistence) or dynamic (volcanic resurfacing, erosion, precipitation/dissolution cycles)?
• What is the terrain's communication character? (Does it conduct, attenuate, transform, or amplify the species' communication medium?)

Settlement patterns are DERIVED from terrain constraints, not chosen from a menu. A fragmented terrain produces multiple isolated settlements. A continuous terrain permits continuous governance. A dynamic terrain prevents permanent infrastructure. Document the terrain first, then derive what it allows.

Phase 2: Derivation Questions

For each functional need, derive the structure from constraints. Describe the mechanism first. Name it after.

Coordination: Given this species' communication medium, cognitive architecture, group size, and environmental pressures — how do multiple individuals align their behavior?

• If deception is impossible → coordination may be near-automatic
• If deception is possible but costly → trust signals emerge
• If deception is easy and cheap → verification structures emerge
• If cognition is collective → "coordination" may not be a separate problem at all
• If the environment forces congregation → coordination scales up
• If the environment forces dispersal → coordination stays local
• If the group is small enough for everyone to know everyone → formal institutions may never be needed
• If the group exceeds cognitive tracking limits → delegation and abstraction structures emerge

Resource distribution: Given what's scarce, how it's accessed, and how the species communicates — what distribution pattern emerges?

• If resources require cooperation to access → sharing structures emerge
• If resources are individually accessible → distribution may not be a social problem
• If the scarce resource is social (access, attention, bonding, status) rather than material → the distribution system looks nothing like commerce
• If the species can directly sense others' resource states → hoarding may be biologically impossible or socially prohibited
• If surplus is impossible (perishable resources, no storage technology) → accumulation-based economics never emerges
• If surplus is automatic (abundant energy, self-replicating resources) → scarcity-based economics never emerges

Collective decisions: Given this cognitive architecture and group structure — how does the group resolve disagreements about action?

• If information asymmetry is impossible → most political problems dissolve
• If individual cognition is incomplete without the group → decisions may be emergent rather than deliberated
• If the species has strong dominance biology → hierarchy may be involuntary and pre-cognitive
• If the species has no dominance biology → hierarchy may never emerge
• If the group is small → consensus may be the only viable mechanism
• If the group is large and communication is limited → representation or delegation structures emerge from necessity, not from ideology

Knowledge transmission: Given this communication medium, cognitive architecture, and lifespan — how does information persist across generations?

• If the medium is volatile (sound, light) → external storage or ritual repetition emerges
• If the medium is persistent (chemical, geological, field-state) → the environment itself may be the knowledge store
• If cognition is collective and continuous → "generations" may not be a meaningful knowledge boundary
• If lifespan is very long → generational transmission is less urgent
• If development is rapid → apprenticeship-style learning dominates
• If symbolic abstraction is strong → written records become possible
• If symbolic abstraction is weak or absent → knowledge is embodied, performed, or physically encoded

Conflict resolution: Given this biology, cognition, and resource landscape — what happens when individuals or groups have incompatible goals?

• If goals are transparent (no deception) → conflicts may resolve through information rather than force
• If the species has strong empathic biology → harm may be self-limiting
• If reproduction is the primary driver → conflict modality follows reproductive strategy
• If individuals are expendable to the collective → individual conflict may not be socially relevant
• If resources are abundant → conflict over resources is rare; conflict over status, mates, or ideology may still exist
• If the environment is the primary threat → intraspecies conflict may be suppressed in favor of cooperation against external pressures

Identity and belonging: Given this biology and cognition — what constitutes a group, and how does membership work?

• If the species is territorial → geography defines groups
• If the species is migratory → kinship or communication-network defines groups
• If cognition is individual → group identity is constructed
• If cognition is collective → group identity may be literal, not metaphorical
• If reproduction requires specific partnerships → kinship structures emerge from reproductive biology
• If reproduction is asexual or communal → kinship as humans understand it may not exist

Bond allocation (for species with bonding-gated sapience):

If this species achieves cognitive enhancement through biological bonding (symbiotic integration, parasitic attachment, metamorphic partnership, or any mechanism where one organism enhances another's cognition through physical integration):

• How many bonds can an individual host simultaneously? Does the biology support variable bond count?
• Does bond count correlate with cognitive capacity? If so, controlling who receives additional bonds is the most powerful governance lever available. How does this civilization manage that power?
• Pre-civilization: was bonding random/instinctive? What changed when civilizations recognized the cognitive correlation?
• What is the cultural attitude toward bond count? Is it a reward for contribution, a birthright, a sacred gift, or unregulated?

Congenital variation:

Every threshold-dependent developmental mechanism produces a distribution of outcomes, not a binary. For any biologically complex species:

• What happens to individuals born outside the standard biological range? Zero bond nodes, atypical reproductive output, non-functional sensory apparatus, intermediate type expression?
• How does this civilization treat biological variation? Is it accommodated, excluded, revered, feared, or instrumentalized?
• Has any technology been derived from studying atypical biology? (The most consequential technologies often originate from studying what was initially considered defective.)

Phase 3: Structure Naming

After derivation, name each structure in two ways:

1. Functional name: What it does, in plain language. "Resource-access coordination through ambient field-state signaling"
2. In-species name: What the species would call it, once language exists. (May need to wait for the language phase of /civilization-build.)

Comparison annotations are useful but secondary: "Humans would loosely recognize this as an economy, though it lacks exchange, currency, or markets — the closest Earth analogue might be a gift economy crossed with ecological mutualism."

The functional name is the primary label. The comparison is a reader aid.

Phase 4: Negative Derivation

Equally important: what familiar social structures does this civilization NOT have, and why?

For each major institutional category, explicitly state whether it emerges or not, and trace the reasoning:

• Governance/politics: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Information asymmetry, competing hidden interests, binding collective decisions needed, group size exceeding informal coordination)
• Markets/economy: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Divisible transferable goods, surplus possible, individual ownership concept, exchange as coordination mechanism)
• Organized religion: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Supernatural agency detection, existential uncertainty requiring narrative resolution, ritual-capable cognition, non-falsifiable belief systems possible)
• Formal education: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Knowledge that doesn't transfer automatically, developmental period requiring guided learning, symbolic instruction capability)
• Military: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Organized lethal intergroup competition, command hierarchy, strategic planning for violence, groups large enough to specialize combatants)
• Law/justice: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Norm violation detection, proportional punishment capability, precedent-based reasoning, concept of individual responsibility)
• Kinship/family: Does this civilization have the preconditions? (Pair-bonding or parental investment biology, offspring that require care, intergenerational resource transfer)

For human civilizations, add:

• Currency/money: Do environmental conditions produce the double-coincidence-of-wants problem that money solves?
• Property/ownership: Do environmental conditions produce excludable, rivalrous resources worth defending?
• Urbanization: Do environmental conditions support dense permanent settlement? Is there surplus agriculture?

Absence is as important as presence. A civilization without property law is not "primitive" — it may exist in conditions where property is an incoherent concept. Document the absence and the reason.

Catastrophe resilience profile:

If the world has experienced or will experience a civilization-scale catastrophic event (network collapse, environmental shift, resource exhaustion), derive where this civilization sits on the resilience spectrum:

• Network-dependent (most vulnerable): Civilization's infrastructure relies on interconnected systems (relay networks, trade routes, continuous communication). Catastrophe that disrupts the network cascades through all connected nodes simultaneously.

• Peripherally-connected (partially vulnerable): Connected to the network but not dependent on it for core survival functions. Catastrophe damages but does not destroy.

• Structurally isolated (resilient through irrelevance): Never connected to the network. The catastrophe that destroyed connected civilizations passes through as attenuated noise. Survival is not a virtue — it is a structural consequence of pre-existing isolation.

The resilience position is determined by the same communication and geographic constraints that produced the civilization's social structure. It is not a separate analysis — it is a consequence of the derivation already completed. Document it as an output, not as a design decision.

Phase 5: Emergent Novelty

After Phases 2–4, check: did the derivation produce any coordination structures that have NO familiar analogue?

If yes, this is the most valuable output. These are the structures that make this civilization genuinely new rather than a reskin of a familiar one. Give them full treatment:

• Describe the mechanism in detail
• Explain what functional need they serve
• Explain why familiar structures don't serve that need in this context
• Name them functionally
• Flag them for the author as the civilization's distinctive social contributions

Phase 6: Sister-Population Derivation (Optional — Use When Applicable)

When a population shares ancestral biology with an already-derived population and differs primarily in geographic or environmental conditions, use delta-derivation rather than building from scratch.

Procedure:

1. Load the existing sister population's nation file completely. All shared biology, communication physics, and environmental chemistry carry over.

2. Identify the SPECIFIC environmental variables that differ: terrain type, temperature, elevation, proximity to water, substrate variant, atmospheric exposure.

3. For each differing variable, trace the cascade through the derivation chain: how does this one change alter communication, settlement pattern, resource access, group dynamics, governance, knowledge transmission, and cultural identity?

4. Derive the divergence narrative: what the ancestor population was, when the split occurred (or whether it was gradual geographic drift rather than a discrete event), and what each population considers the defining difference between them.

5. Document the relationship from BOTH sides: each sister population has a perspective on the other that derives from what it values most about its own adaptation. The tension between sister populations is not hostility — it is the quiet certainty of two groups who share everything except the particular thing each has built its identity around.

When to use: Any time two populations share >80% of their biological and environmental constraints. The delta-derivation is faster and more reliable than independent full derivation because it prevents accidental divergence in shared biology.

When NOT to use: When populations share geography but not biology (different species), or when the environmental difference is so extreme that the shared biology produces fundamentally different organisms (at that point, use full independent derivation).

Output

Save derivation analysis to: meta/design-decisions/YYYY-MM-DD-social-derivation-[civilization].md

Structure:

1. Constraint inventory (from Phase 1)
2. Derived structures with mechanism traces (from Phase 2)
3. Named structures with comparison annotations (from Phase 3)
4. Negative derivations with reasoning (from Phase 4)
5. Novel structures (from Phase 5)
6. Open questions and gaps flagged for author decision

Rules

• Every derived structure must trace back to a specific biological, cognitive, or environmental constraint. "It would be interesting" is not a derivation.
• If you catch yourself thinking "all civilizations have X," stop. Check whether this civilization's constraints produce the preconditions for X.
• Absence of a familiar institution is a finding, not a gap to fill.
• Do not resolve open questions with assumptions. Flag them.
• The derivation analysis is a design document, not a final file. Author approves before it becomes worldbuilding content.
• Convergent derivation is valid. If the constraints genuinely produce something resembling a familiar institution, that's fine — the derivation chain is what matters, not whether the result is novel.

Out of Scope

Does NOT write final civilization files (use /writing-worldbuilding). Does NOT design planets or biology (use /designing-worlds, /writing-science). Does NOT audit for imported assumptions after the fact (use /auditing-human-assumptions).
